The Corbin Educational Center (CEC) was recently evaluated by the Kentucky Educational Collaborative for State Agency Children (KECSAC), receiving exemplary ratings across every evaluated category.
On the day of the visit, Oct. 15, CEC had 36 students enrolled. Out of those students, 31 were classified as state agency children (SAC). Of the SAC students, 14 received special education services, and no students had a 504 plan. Educational services are provided by five full-time teachers and two part-time teachers.
The review, completed by lead specialist Peggy Shearer, looked at multiple standards, including teaching and assessing for learning, governance and leadership, purpose and direction, and resources and support systems.
According to the report, CEC’s strengths include recent renovations and upgrades to equipment, improvements to safety and climate, and an inviting learning environment.
The report also identified several areas for continued improvement, including utilizing data to adjust curriculum and instruction, expanding student engagement through hands-on learning, enhancing teacher collaboration, and strengthening communication within families.
“I’m just happy. Happy for my staff and my students,” said CEC Principal Lorie Barton. “I think it acknowledges what my staff does every day.
Looking forward, Barton is open to growth and improvement regarding the future of exemplary ratings.
“I’m always learning and getting better every day,” said Barton. “We’ll just keep trying new things.”
The CEC is a Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ)-contracted day treatment program, serving students in grades 4 through 12 across Corbin Independent, Whitley County, and Williamsburg Independent Schools.
