A Corbin man will serve 10 years in prison after pleading guilty to the rape of a then 13-year-old in 2013.
Thirty-eight-year-old Robert Freeman was scheduled to go to trial today in Laurel Circuit Court on four counts of second-degree rape.
At Freeman’s final pretrial hearing Monday, a plea agreement was reached in the case.
Under the terms of the agreement, Freeman pleaded guilty to two counts of second-degree rape. In return, the commonwealth recommended that Judge Tom Jensen sentence Freeman to 10 years in prison on each count, to be served concurrently, meaning for each day Freeman is in custody, he will receive credit toward both sentences.
The remaining counts will be dismissed.
Freeman was indicted in March following an investigation by Kentucky State Police Detective Mark Allen.
Allen said previously that the investigation began in August 2013 when the victim’s mother contacted state police.
The indictment alleged that Freeman had sexual intercourse with the victim on four occasions between January 2013 and August 2013. Allen said previously that the victim was an acquaintance of Freeman but declined to get into specifics of how they knew each other in order to protect the victim’s identity.
Under Kentucky Law, second-degree rape is a class C felony, carrying a potential prison sentence of five to 10 years.
