Corbin man charged with DUI after nearly hitting police car

Date:

A Corbin man was arrested Thursday night after police say a head-on collision between his motorcycle and a Knox County Sheriff’s deputy’s cruiser was narrowly avoided.

Deputy William Stewart, the department’s public affairs officer, said deputies arrested 53-year-old Joseph H. Schulten following the incident on U.S. 25E in Corbin.

Stewart stated that Deputy Mikey Ashurst was travelling south when he saw a bright light coming straight at him.

“Deputy Ashurst had to swerve off the roadway to avoid being struck head-on by a motorcycle traveling north in the southbound lane,” Stewart stated adding that another vehicle was almost struck seconds later.

Ashurst initiated pursuit and conducted a traffic stop in the parking lot of the Corbin Station shopping center.

Schulten was charged with operating a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol/drugs, reckless driving, first-degree wanton endangerment and improper turning.

Schulten was lodged in the Knox County Detention Center where he is being held on a $5,000 cash bond.
