Corbin Schools will not be in session Monday, August 21, 2017 due to the national Solar Eclipse event.
The Corbin District will join numerous school district across the state in designating the day as a non-traditional instruction day. The NTI day will focus on the eclipse as the curriculum.
The decision to close the district is due largely to safety concerns, as the eclipse will be in full force around dismissal time. While the eclipse is a scientific learning opportunity, there are potential dangers if people do not use proper eye protection.
“The Solar Eclipse is a significant scientific phenomena which happens about once every 35 years. However, there is potential for adults and/or children to damage their eyes permanently during the eclipse,” Superintendent David Cox said. “Consequently, we feel it is best for our students to view the eclipse under parental supervision.”
All of North America will experience the Solar Eclipse. The Corbin School District wants to insure students are able to participate while still being safe. Parents may visit:
