Crash near Corbin leads to drug arrest

Laurel County Sheriff’s deputies arrested a Florida man whom they say was driving under the influence of drugs when his vehicle went off the road near Corbin and overturned into a ditch Wednesday afternoon.

According to Sheriff John Root, deputies were called to the scene on Ky. 1223, east of U.S. 25 about 3 p.m. where they discovered Terry W. Bilger, 44, of Tampa, Fla. had sustained minor injuries from the single-vehicle wreck.

According to investigators, Bilger was traveling east on Ky. 1223 in his mother’s Chevrolet Monte Carlo when he lost control of the vehicle and ran off the road. After striking a culvert, the vehicle overturned and came to rest in the ditch. The vehicle caught fire, but Bilger was able to escape.

Root stated that deputies found numerous assorted pills in Bilger’s possession, including Xanax and Zanaflex, along with a large amount of U.S. currency. According to the website drugs.com, Zanaflex is a muscle relaxer. Side effects may include feeling light-headed, fainting, hallucinations, confusion, drowsiness and/or dizziness.

In addition, deputies discovered a bag of marijuana and a marijuana pipe.

Bilger was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of marijuana, controlled substance prescriptions not in proper container and third-degree trafficking in a controlled substance.

Bilger was treated at Saint Joseph Hospital – London and then turned over to the custody of the sheriff’s department. He has been lodged in the Laurel County Correctional Center where he is being held without bond.

He is scheduled to appear in Laurel District Court on Jan. 23.
