Exploring Healthcare: A Week at Baptist Health Corbin

Date:

A group of eager students from our community recently embarked on a unique journey into the world of healthcare at Baptist Health Corbin. This special initiative aimed to inspire the next generation of healthcare professionals by providing hands-on experiences and insightful encounters with our hospital’s operations.

The week kicked off with enthusiastic introductions as students were warmly welcomed by hospital leadership.

“We would also like to extend our heartfelt thanks to the many departments across Baptist Health Corbin who graciously welcomed students into their areas, shared their knowledge, and helped bring healthcare careers to life. From clinical staff to support services, your willingness to take time from your day to educate and inspire made a lasting impression on these students. Your enthusiasm and hospitality played a vital role in the success of this camp – and in shaping the future of healthcare,” hospital officials wrote in a release.

One of the highlights was the hands-on lab sessions, where students delved into the art of medicine. Under the guidance of skilled instructors, they practiced suturing techniques and dissected anatomical models, gaining invaluable insights into medical procedures.

Equally important was their training in life-saving skills. Through interactive sessions, students mastered the fundamentals of hands-only CPR, empowering them with knowledge that could one day save lives.

Beyond these enriching educational activities, the week was filled with fun and camaraderie. Team-building exercises and engaging games fostered a sense of community among the participants, creating lasting memories of their time together.

“Our goal was to show students the many paths a career in healthcare can take,” said Bridget Goins, Director of Human Resources at Baptist Health Corbin and leader of the camp. “Watching their excitement as they explored everything from surgery to lab science was truly inspiring. They asked great questions, showed curiosity, and left with a better understanding of how healthcare works – and how they might be a part of it in the future.”

A special thank you goes to Jake Christensen and Anthony Coffee, both from Southern Kentucky AHEC (Area Health Education Center), and Abby Lamb, Intern, EKU, for their invaluable partnership.

Goins stated, “We could not have done this without our partners, Southern Kentucky AHEC. Jake, Anthony and Abby’s support made it possible to offer a variety of hands-on experiments and engaging activities that truly brought healthcare learning to life.”

As the students bid farewell, their hearts were undoubtedly filled with newfound knowledge and aspirations. The healthcare camp at Baptist Health Corbin not only opened doors to a world of possibilities but also planted seeds of compassion and dedication in these future healthcare leaders.

Baptist Health Corbin is a 273-bed, acute care facility providing a wide variety of healthcare services to residents of Whitley, Knox, Laurel, Bell, Clay, Harlan and McCreary counties in Kentucky and Campbell County in Tennessee.
