‘Footloose Prom’ being held for those not able to attend traditional event

Date:

In 2019, the first-ever “Footloose Prom” was held at the Corbin Civic Center. The idea behind the event was to give local students who had to miss their school proms for one reason or another a second chance to make those important memories. It was a big success, with hundreds of students attending, which factored into why the event will be making its return in 2024.

“We have decided to bring the Footloose Prom back, and to continue doing it yearly,” said organizer Stephanie Gray.

This year’s dance will be held at the Sweet Hollow Resort, located on Sweet Hollow Road in Corbin, and high schoolers from pretty much anywhere are invited to attend for free. This includes students who are home schooled as well.

“School districts made it where if a student has missed a number of days of school, they cannot attend their prom,” Gray said when asked about the original reasoning behind the creation of the Footloose Prom. “Also, districts did not allow students to bring a student from a different school to prom, and if the student had any discipline issues throughout the school year, they wouldn’t be allowed to attend either.”

“We want to bring all of the surrounding schools, home schools, children’s homes, church youth, etc. together for a prom that they are all welcome to [attend]. Free of charge,” Gray added.

This year’s Footloose Prom has been scheduled for Saturday, April 27, starting at 7 p.m. Parents will be welcome for a walk-through of the facility and photo opportunities beginning at 6:15 p.m. Finger foods and drinks will be made available during the dance. No drugs, alcohol or tobacco products will be permitted, and security services will be provided.
