Police: No charges likely after child falls from second-story window

Date:

Authorities say they aren’t at this time considering criminal charges for the parents or guardians of a two-year-old that fell from a two-story window at a Corbin apartment complex and was seriously injured Monday evening.

Gilbert Acciardo, Public Affairs Officer for the Laurel County Sheriff’s Department, said the accident happened at about 6:00 p.m. at Corbin Manor Apartments, located off American Greeting Card Road in extreme southern Laurel County. Senior Sgt. Greg Poynter responded to the incident.

“We really didn’t even fill out an investigative report. We aren’t anticipating any charges being filed at this time,” Acciardo said.
Police say the two-year-old girl and a four-year-old were playing together in an upstairs apartment.

“The adults in the house didn’t realize the upstairs window was open. The kids were just playing and throwing toys out the window and the two-year-old fell out … it was an accident,” Acciardo said.

The two-year-old was airlifted to the University of Kentucky Medical Center in Lexington for treatment. Acciardo said the extent of the child’s injuries and current condition is unknown.

Police are not releasing the name of the child.

A resident at Corbin Manor said the child hit an air conditioning unit after the fall. Neighbors alerted the adults in the apartment to the situation.
