Arson suspected in fire that damaged Corbin home Monday

Date:

This home, on Wyrick Street in Corbin, was damaged by fire Monday. Officials suspect arson may be the cause of the blaze.

Four different points of origin and a person seen running from the scene has led authorities to suspect arson as the cause of a house fire in Corbin Monday.

West Knox Fire Chief Daryl Baker said the fire that damagee the home at 134 East Wyrick Street started in the living room and each of the three bedrooms in the home.

“In two of the rooms, the fire started in the mattress and in the living room it started in a chair,” Baker said. “In the third bedroom where most of the damage is, we are still investigating where that might have started.”

Baker said the fire started about 3:15 p.m. and had been burning for about 10 to 15 minutes before a neighbor noticed it and called 911.

The neighbor also reported seeing someone, who was wearing a camouflage jacket, running behind the house and into the woods.

Kentucky State Police were called to the scene in an effort to track the individual. The person was tracked to Ky. 1232 (Old Barbourville Hwy.) before the trail was lost.

Firefighters had the blaze under control in about 30 minutes and were able to save many of the personal items inside.

“The house has moderate fire damage and there is smoke and heat damage throughout it,” Baker said.

Police and firefighters canvassed the neighborhood seeking information on the suspect, who is wanted for questioning.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Kentucky State Police Post 10 at (606) 573-3131.

A $1,000 reward is being offered through the “Target Arson” Program for the arrest and conviction of the perpetrator.
