Area woman facing charges of receiving stolen property, leaving the scene of an accident

Date:

A local woman was allegedly an occupant in a stolen vehicle when it collided with another vehicle in southern Laurel County earlier this month. Then she left the scene of the accident and got a ride to the Corbin Walmart where she was not permitted on the property, according to her arrest citations.

Hayley Byerly

During her arraignment on Dec. 3, Judge John Paul Chappell entered a not guilty plea for Hayley F. Byerly, 20, who is charged with third-degree criminal trespassing, leaving scene of an accident/failure to render aid, receiving stolen property value $10,000 or more, and two counts of second-degree wanton endangerment.

Chappell set a $5,000 cash bond in the case.

One arrest citation indicates Byerly has a Gray address while the other indicates she has a Lily address.

The accident happened about 10 p.m. on Dec. 2 near the intersection of KY-312 and Level Green Road in the southern portion of Laurel County, according to a Laurel County Sheriff’s Department release.

A vehicle, which had been reported stolen out of Boone County sometime between 6:30 p.m. on Nov. 30 and 9:30 p.m. on Dec. 1, struck the rear of another vehicle. The occupant of the stolen vehicle fled the scene after hitting the other vehicle, according to an arrest citation.

While on the scene of the accident, deputies received a call about a woman acting suspiciously at Walmart in Corbin.

Detective Justin Taylor located the woman, Byerly, who had visible blood on her shirt and injuries to her lower right leg. She told police that she received a ride from an unknown subject from the area of the collision scene to Walmart, Deputy Robert Smith wrote on an arrest citation.

Police determined that the Byerly had an active trespass order from Walmart and was not permitted to be on the property. Deputy Matt Walker transported her to the Laurel County Correctional Center, according to the arrest citation.

Smith then proceeded to Wallens Towing to conduct an inventory and evidence search from the stolen vehicle where he located a backpack and a black bag in the passenger side floorboard. The black bag contained a job application bearing the personal information of Byerly, Smith wrote on the arrest citation.

Smith then went to the Laurel County Correctional Center and interviewed Byerly where she allegedly confirmed that the backpack and black bag belonged to her. She told police that she met an unidentified man in Boone County, who provided her transportation to Corbin where the vehicle collision occurred, the citation stated.

She was unable to provide names or identifying information for any other occupants of the vehicle.

The vehicle, which was struck by the stolen vehicle, had a father and his four-year-old daughter inside. The father told police that after the impact, he exited his vehicle and observed one occupant exiting the driver’s side of the stolen vehicle fleeing on foot, Smith wrote on the arrest citation.

Deputy Arnold Arnett also assisted with the investigation.

As of 2:30 p.m. Monday, Byerly remained incarcerated in the Laurel County Correctional Center, according to the correctional center’s website.
