Breast cancer remains the most diagnosed cancer among women, so it’s important for men and women to be vigilant and informed about the signs and symptoms of the disease. Baptist Health Corbin is raising awareness to promote early detection and treatment.
Early signs and symptoms of breast cancer include: a lump in the breast, a rash around the nipple, changes in the appearance, shape and size of the nipple changes, thickening of breast tissue, discharge from the nipple, pain in the breast, pain or swelling in the armpit, and skin on the nipple may flake, peel or scale.
Early detection remains a crucial factor in the battle against breast cancer, so performing monthly breast cancer self-exams can be crucial.
“Monthly breast exams are important because they can help detect changes in your breast, such as a lump, thickening or dimpling. When breast cancer is detected early, the chances of survival are much greater,” said Lindsey Jones, Breast Cancer Navigator at Baptist Health Corbin.
While mammograms can help detect cancer before feeling a lump, breast self-exams can help someone become more familiar with the look and feel of their breasts so irregularities can be noticed sooner. Reach out to your healthcare provider if you notice any changes in your breasts, such as a new lump, sore spot, changes in the appearance of skin, or discharge from the nipple.
