Why the jump in gas prices?

Here they go again and why? Gas prices have jumped 20 cents a gallon in the past two days. The price for a barrel of oil has risen slightly but not enough to justify the big increase. People everywhere are asking why the increase.....It is worse in Lexington where gas is about 25 cents a gallon more than it is here....Planning that vacation...they see you coming and you'll pay more

Delving a little deeper into our website

One of the most positive things to come out of our redesigned Internet site is the ability to bring you, the readers, more information than ever before. I've always lamented the fact that the tens of thousands of you that read the News Journal are only getting a glimpse of the actual story behind the stories. As reporters, everyday we come across important government documents or other little tidbits of information that you never get to actually see for yourself because of space limitation in the print edition of our paper, or because it simply isn't practical to publish it. So you have to rely on us telling you what...

Just some random thoughts

Just a few random thoughts to air out while I’m waiting to go to lunch today.

DOMINATION

Corbin has been blessed with talent on the tennis court for decades. That tradition continued when Lance Freeman, Lee Crawford, Nick Huff and Krishna Patil entered middle school. They have worked their way through the program and are seniors this year at CHS.

GOING SOUTH

Williamsburg senior Jacob Teague will not have to change much of his décor when takes off for college next fall to play basketball at Emory & Henry University in Emory, Virginia, just outside of Bristol.

WORTH THE WAIT

Williamsburg will be making its first trip to the All A State Softball Tournament for small schools this week at Skyview Park in Jeffersontown. The Lady Jackets will open the 16-team tournament against St. Henry at noon.

CLOSE GAME

The Williamsburg Lady Jackets are trying to stay out of the number four seed in the up-coming softball district tournament. To do what they needed, a win over the South Laurel Lady Cardinals was a must or a win over the Whitley County Lady Colonels Friday.

COLONELS POP CARDS

The Whitley County Colonels are hot! Coach Rob Ledington’s Colonels defeated South Laurel Monday, 5-3 and won their 11th game in the last 12 starts. It was their sixth in a row.

The win also allowed the Colonels to tie the Cardinals for first in the district standings with a 4-1 record and assured Whitley County of at least the number two seed. The teams were scheduled for a second game in London Tuesday afternoon with the top seed on the line.

MIDWAY BOUND

Lyndsay Champlin, a senior at Corbin High School, has signed with Midway College. The three-year starter for the Lady Redhounds led Corbin to two regional tournaments and enjoyed a 73-44 record in her four years of high school.

SIGNING WITH THE PATS

Whitley County senior Mike Storms has decided to further his career on the hardwood by signing with the University of the Cumberlands junior varsity with hopes of moving up to the varsity in a couple of years.
