Path to state championships now clearer as KHSAA sets football playoff brackets

After the completion of regular season district play last week, the Kentucky High School Athletic Association (KHSAA) has released state championship playoff brackets for each of its six football classes. While all four coverage area teams will be looking to finish out their regular season schedules on a high note later this week, we can now use these brackets to look ahead and consider the path that each squad must take to achieve their ultimate state championship aspirations. Corbin should cruise to regional finals You have to go back to the 2019 season to find the last time that the Corbin Redhounds ran into any sort of trouble during the first...

Par for the Course: Thanks to those who’ve helped make this column possible

This week marks 35 Par for the Course columns that have been featured in the pages of the News Journal throughout 2025. While it’s not exactly what I envisioned when I first made plans to launch the series, I think it’s been a pretty good run. With that being said, I am retiring the column… for now. I am open to reviving Par for the Course at some point, but right now I have to put it on indefinite hiatus for a number of reasons. First, I am about to dedicate a considerable amount of time in the coming weeks to not only wrapping up what is left of the...

Par for the Course: My (way) above par afternoon in the simulator

When I first started this column, one of the main goals that I had in mind was to make an honest attempt to pick up the game of golf myself. Admittedly, I haven’t done a great job with that. I managed to work in a couple of lessons early on, but this past spring and summer my goal of actually getting out onto a course, or at least going to the driving range, was sadly unmet. What can I say? Life has been hectic, and my work schedule at the moment really isn’t conducive to picking up new hobbies. Mostly, I have been busy writing about other people’s experiences on...

In Class A action Friday, the Williamsburg Yellow Jackets traveled to Middlesboro and suffered a 22-14 defeat,...

Friday Night Highlights: Week 8 High School Football Results

The Hounds made easy work of the Bears, cruising to a 53-6 victory to improve to 4-3 on the season. They will be back at Campbell Field next week to host Whitley County for Homecoming night. Speaking of the Colonels, they were also on the road in week 8, traveling to Perry County Central to face their first district opposition this season. Unfortunately, they were unable to break their current...

Soccer district finals set after pair of close contests Thursday

The Whitley County Colonels and the Corbin Redhounds both saw their 2025 seasons come to a close Thursday evening after a pair of ultra-competitive semifinal round contests in this year's boys' 49th District tournament, being hosted by South Laurel. The Colonels bested the host Cardinals earlier this week, 5-3, to advance to the tournament semifinals. They met up with North Laurel in the semis Thursday, falling in extra time, 3-2. Following that game, the Corbin Redhounds took on Oneida Baptist Institute in what ended up being another nailbiter. In the end, the Hounds fell to the Mountaineers, 4-3, ending their 2025 campaign with an overall record of 8-7-1. Whitley ended...

Friday Night Highlights: Hounds lose heartbreaker, Jackets victorious over Pineville

Week 7 was a big one for two coverage area football teams, as the Corbin Redhounds hosted Johnson  Central in yet another high-profile encounter at Campbell Field and the Williamsburg Yellow Jackets returned to action for the first time since Sept. 12. The Hounds were coming off of a bye week, which means they had some extra time to prepare for the undefeated Golden Eagles of Johnson Central. Things were looking grim at the half, as the visitors led by two scores, 22-7, but Corbin came out swinging in the third quarter, eventually cutting the lead down to one point, 22-21. The Hounds took a 28-22 lead in the fourth quarter,...

Par for the Course: Daniels eager to see what Colonels can do in regional competition

Jeremy Daniels is serving as the newest boys golf head coach at Whitley County High School. A member of the WCHS Class of 2010, he played golf himself as a Colonel for six years. He says that getting to return and take over a program that he was once a member of all those years ago is a “pretty cool” experience. “I like the competitiveness of the sport,” said Daniels, who has also served as a longtime assistant for the school’s varsity baseball team and has volunteered as an assistant football coach at the middle school level in the past. “There is the one-on-one factor, but then it is also...
