In the year 2000, Scott Bishop read a Golf Digest article on scholarship opportunities in girls golf. After asking the superintendent if Whitley County High School could start its own girls golf team, he was tasked with getting it off the ground.
Bishop said that the early years were a struggle, but by the mid-2000’s the team was competing for, and winning, regional titles.
In recent years, Bishop has served as an assistant coach and has offered private lessons. This year, he is once again being tasked with leading the Lady Colonels as head coach. “I am extremely excited and grateful for the opportunity,” he said. “It is going to...
Austin Reynolds is excited to be back at his old stomping grounds as the new head coach of the Corbin High School girls golf team. As a member of the CHS Class of 2019, he played football and baseball for the Redhounds before going on to develop a love for golf after completing his undergraduate work at Union Commonwealth University, formerly Union College.
“I had a buddy who said I should try it,” Reynolds said recently of getting involved with golf. “I have dedicated the last three-and-a-half years to getting good, and I love it now. It’s what I do with my free time.”
Reynolds graduated from Union in 2022 with...

Welcome back to Par for the Course. After a month off, this golf-centric column is making its return in the pages of the News Journal just in time to preview the upcoming fall season. That will be my primary focus for the next several weeks, so let’s get right into it with the Corbin Redhounds…
Head Coach Joe Roberts is returning to lead the way for the CHS boys, and despite graduating a pair of veteran players from last year’s roster, he said his 2025 squad will once again feature a good level of talent and experience.Â
“We will have three returning players in our top five, and we have some...
The Corbin Independent School District announced Wednesday that they have hired Luke Salmons to be the next head coach of the CHS varsity football program.
“CISD has agreed in principle with Coach Luke Salmons from Cabell Midland High School (West Virginia) to be the next head coach of the Redhounds,” said a statement from the district. “More information will follow in the coming days, and a reception to welcome Coach Salmons and his family to Redhound Nation will take place next week.”
Additional details regarding Salmons’ hire will be provided soon.
Two seasons ago, Kallie Housley and Darcie Anderson were a pair of veteran leaders on the Corbin High School girls basketball team. Helping lead the Lady Hounds to 13th Region tournament appearances their sophomore, junior and senior years, and a state tournament berth in 2022, they played a huge role in raising the bar for success within the program.
After high school, both Housley and Anderson have gone on to continue their athletic careers at the next level. Anderson made the short trip to Williamsburg where she is currently a member of the University of the Cumberlands women’s basketball team, while Housley moved just across the state line to Harrogate,...
Former Williamsburg Yellow Jacket Cam Bowen
“It’s all about perseverance.” That is what former Williamsburg Yellow Jacket Cameron Bowen had to say about making it to the professional level of sports. You have to possess a certain level of athletic talent, of course, but according to him, the most important thing is always going to be the amount of heart and dedication that you’re able to bring into the equation.
Bowen was a member of the WHS varsity baseball team between 2015-2019, helping lead the Yellow Jackets to back-to-back 13th Region “All A” championship titles as a junior and senior in 2018 and 2019.Â
In 2020, Bowen began his collegiate career at...

This summer, former Corbin Redhound and current Lincoln Memorial University Railsplitter Bradric Helton is continuing to hone his skills on the baseball diamond as a member of the Dubois County Bombers in Huntingburg, Ind. This development actually creates a unique connection between him and the late Mary Weddle-Hines, one of Corbin’s most famous citizens, who passed away nearly four years ago.
You see, the Bombers play in the historic League Stadium, which was originally built in 1894. In 1991, the stadium was renovated and used for the filming of A League of Their Own, the now-classic sports movie starring Tom Hanks and Geena Davis that told a fictionalized story based...
