The Knox Whitley Animal Shelter (KWAS), in collaboration with Mobile Mutts Rescue Transport, are hosting the Summer Garden Party in an effort to raise money to help with providing care to local animals.
All proceeds from this event will contribute towards spay and neuter programs, as well as saving as many lives as possible. The garden party is going to be located at the Oak Hill Gardens on Saturday, July 30, from 4 p.m. – 7 p.m.

Autopsy results indicate that a Corbin woman, who is the wife of a well-known Whitley County public defender, and an Oak Ridge man, who were found unresponsive in a hot tub in April, both drown with alcohol and pre-existing medical conditions playing contributing factors.
Police were called to the Gatlinburg Falls Resort about 8 a.m. on April 9 where they found Myra Smith-Findell, 62, of Corbin and Jon Levin, 63, of Oak Ridge, dead in the hot tub of a cabin.
Smith-Findell is the wife of long-time public defender Ron Findell, who was the person that discovered the two dead.
Both were autopsied at the Knox County Regional Forensic Center.

A federal judge could decide as early as next month whether to grant an injunction that would force the University of the Cumberlands to pay its former president Dr. James Taylor nearly $400,000 in annual salary and benefits until a lawsuit Taylor filed against the university is settled.

A Corbin man was taken to Baptist Health Corbin Monday afternoon after his motorcycle collided with an SUV on Gordon Street.
The wreck occurred about 1 p.m. at the intersection of Gordon and Earls Street.
According to police, the man on the motorcycle, identified as Robert Marcum, was travelling west on Gordon Street when the Kia Borrego SUV driven by Tawana Humfleet attempted to make a left turn onto east Gordon Street.
The motorcycle broadsided the SUV.
Officer Rick Baker said Marcum, who was wearing a helmet, suffered a bump on the head and some abrasions on his legs.
Whitley EMS transported Marcum to the hospital.

Kentucky State Police have arrested a London man who allegedly stabbed his mother and stepfather Sunday in Knox County.
Thirty-five-year-old Joe Gibson is facing two counts of attempted murder in connection with the incident that police say occurred about 1 p.m. somewhere along Ky. 1803 in northern Knox County.
Trooper Shane Jacobs, public affairs officer at Post 10 in Harlan, said the call initially came in to KSP Post 11 in London as the victims, identified as 52-year-old Connie Smith and 49-year-old Randy Smith had driven to the residence at 1360 Black Water Road in Laurel County after the stabbing occurred.

Approximately 20 city officials, downtown business owners, and other members of the community came to Corbin City Hall Thursday for the first of three meetings to discuss how to make downtown Corbin more accessible and user friendly.
Throughout the course of the one-hour meeting, discussions were held on wayfinding signage, improving traffic flow, and cosmetic and maintenance improvements.

Laurel County Sheriff’s deputies are asking for the public’s help to find the individual who stole a dirt bike from the Corbin Walmart Friday night.
According to Sheriff John Root, the male subject is seen on video pushing the Coleman 125 dirt bike out of the store through the lawn and garden entrance about 7 p.m.
The bike is valued at $899.

Two people are in stable condition at the University of Tennessee Medical Center where they were airlifted following a two-vehicle crash in Woodbine Wednesday.
Whitley County Sheriff’s deputies identified the individuals as 47-year-old Samuel Crabtree of Louisville and 48-year-old Victoria E. Carter of Rockholds, who were driving a 1997 Ford Escort and a 2010 Dodge Caliber, respectively.
Officials at UT said Thursday that Crabtree and Carter are both listed in stable condition.
