Cumberland Run kicks off second season of racing action this Sunday

Harness racing returns to Corbin this weekend as the Mint – Cumberland Run kicks off its second season of competition featuring some of the sport’s top horses and drivers. The action on the track is slated to begin at 1 p.m. this Sunday, Oct. 13, with races continuing the following Monday and Tuesday. Races will take place Sunday-through-Tuesday through the first week in November (Nov. 3-5). Ted Nicholson is the Vice President of racing for Kentucky Downs and is in charge of overseeing race operations at Cumberland Run. Local Toys for Tots campaign receives large donation

Photos by TIMOTHY WYATT Houchen’s Food Group recently donated $11,000 to the South-Central Kentucky Toys for Tots Campaign, which works each year to raise money so a great many area children will have a merrier Christmas season.

Never lose hope for healing: Bethany’s Hope hosts Annual Suicide Prevention Walk

Photos by TIMOTHY WYATT Giving hope : Over 60 people converged at the Green Space on Main in downtown Williamsburg on Saturday morning to participate in the Bethany’s Hope Suicide Awareness Walk. The walk is held annually to honor 16-year-old Whitley County High School student Bethany Faith Lawson, who took her own life in 2018. Participants follow a one-mile loop through town before ending back on Main Street.        

Jerry Rains named emergency management director for both Whitley and Laurel counties

History was made Monday in the Commonwealth of Kentucky as Laurel County Judge-Executive David Westerfield and Whitley County Judge-Executive Pat White Jr. were the first in the state to announce that they had merged their emergency management programs. “I am excited and look forward to this merger, because we feel this is a positive move for both counties. Shoes 4 the Soul event held last week at UC

Wayne Rollins Center on the University of the Cumberlands’ campus last Friday for the annual Shoes 4 the Soul event, which is organized by the university’s campus ministry program, Appalachian Ministries. During the event, the elementary students are paired with staff and college student volunteers who perform a foot washing for the children before providing them with clean socks and a new pair of shoes.      

Local worker’s union rallies outside KCC in solidarity for fired employee

Local worker’s union donates school supplies to Whitley Co.

The donation included $1,000 worth of supplies that students in the district are most in need of. According to Melissa Sergent-Hamblin, treasurer of UE Local 728, the union has provided school supplies to local school districts for the past four year.
