Letter to the Editor: Responding to criticism of ‘self-serving behavior on the city commission’

(Editor’s Note: This letter by Corbin City Commissioner Brandon Shepherd is in response to the “Concerns about self-serving behavior on the city commission” letter to the editor that appeared in the October 7, 2020 edition.) I am responding to a letter in regards to my record as a City Commissioner for the City of Corbin. I am very happy with the direction the city has been steered, and would be honored to be able to serve my wonderful hometown for another two years. Corbin has my heart, and I know my place is here. The letter I am referencing suggests that I was very “instrumental” in halting the alcohol and restaurant tax....

Letter to the Editor: Drug and alcohol rehabilitation and education

(Letter to the Editor By Narconon New Life Retreat) Things are beginning to go back to normal as businesses begin to reopen, and people start going back to normal life. Have you been in self-isolation with a loved one who struggles with substance abuse? If your answer is yes, you need to stay aware of their behavior. With lockdowns across the country, many addicts were forced to clean up but not by choice. As things begin to reopen, this means that access to their vices will once again become available. Combined with the fact that their tolerance to drugs may be low means the chance of a fatal overdose will be higher. For...

Letter to the Editor: ‘Double Taxation & Annexation,’ and a ‘Convicted Felon in KY Gen. Assembly’

(Letter to the Editor by David O. Smith, Corbin) Two non-COVID major issues confront the citizens and businesses in Corbin. First, the double occupational tax our citizens pay on the Knox County side of Corbin. Second, the annexation of the lands around Exit 29 in North Corbin, where the Corbin Utilities Commission provides the utility infrastructure. State Senator Robert Stivers is routinely, and justifiably, chastised for failing to introduce legislation to resolve the annexation issue so Corbin can annex, and failing to introduce legislation to halt the double taxation. In these controversies, Representative Huff just seems to slide by, unnoticed. Has she introduced any legislation to help the people of Corbin with these...

Letter to the Editor: Concerns about ‘self-serving’ behavior on city commission

It appears that one of the main concerns of Brandon Shepherd to serve on the Corbin City Council is to assist the restaurant/bar business in which he is involved. You will recall he was instrumental in having the City halt the alcohol/restaurant tax for a period of time earlier this year due to the impact of COVID. As a City Commissioner, what did he do or have passed to alleviate the financial plight of other businesses in the City of Corbin due to COVID? Did they receive a reduction in privilege license or trash pickup fees, or a credit on their upcoming property taxes? NO. The current City Hall talk is that...

Letter to the Editor: Pregnant ladies, please check out a local assistance center

Psalm 139:13-14 - God, you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works. Jeremiah 1:5 - Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you. As single, separated or divorced pregnant ladies, our emotions are all over the place. If the father of the baby is no longer involved, life can be so very hard. John 3:16 says God loves us. He wants to help us, give us a new life. Jesus wants to help moms who cry out, “Help Jesus, I am hurting.” When you feel confused and unsure what to do, the Lord...

Experience Matters: The Case for Passage of Constitutional Amendment 2

Letter to the Editor: On November 3rd, voters will have an opportunity to raise the bar on Kentucky’s judiciary by requiring candidates for District Court Judge to have more experience. Surprisingly, candidates for District Court Judge must only have a law license for two years. Constitutional Amendment 2 raises that requirement to eight years, commensurate with every other level of Kentucky’s unified court system. At a time when District judges face more and more responsibility and handle important issues like domestic violence, mental illness, and addiction, Constitutional Amendment 2 will benefit Kentuckians by “raising the bar” for candidates to the District Court bench. Our District judges must be prepared to handle...

‘The Power of Words’

(Letter to the Editor by Jack Sellars of Corbin) “The tongue is a fire, a world of unrighteousness... setting on fire the entire course of life, and set on fire by Hell.” - James 3:6 In Proverbs we are snared by the words of our mouth, and death and life are in the tongue. In the Korean War, as a U.S. Marine, we were taught the meaning of discipline and obedience, as well as trusting fellow Marines. In words, you need to recite your general orders, as well as responding to orders, in a lifetime of respect for the U.S. Marine Corps. As a Christian, I have friends and relatives that have different...

Letter to the Editor: Thanks to Poker Run Sponsors

Dear Editor: This year has been one of unfathomable challenges and stresses to our Whitley County residents and businesses.  Yet through it all, some were able to find the resources to support the second annual Upper Cumberland Poker Run to the tune of $5,000.  This fund-raising activity is for Kentucky's only regional community foundation serving Bell, Clay, Knox, Laurel, and Whitley Counties.  The event showcases all our counties with a stop in each. We want to thank all our sponsors publicly.  Sponsoring the event at Hog Heaven level was First National Bank of Manchester and AdventHealth Manchester.  Big Dog sponsor was Baptist Health Corbin.  Cruiser sponsors were Morgan's Pharmacy, Kentucky Highlands...

Letter to the Editor: ‘But he’s MY buffoon-in-chief’

(Editor’s Note: This letter is in response to a letter appearing in the August 5, 2020 edition that was critical of President Donald Trump.) Letter to the Editor By Jerry Whitus of Corbin I respect the right of anyone to express their point of view. Unlike the democrat lefties, I would not try to shout them down, I would not try to run them off campus if they were scheduled to speak, and I would not try to tell them to go and find a free speech zone. And I certainly would not compare them to Hitler, as some have done with my President. Oh, I forgot, maybe those people are...
