Born in Ashland, Kentucky she was the daughter of the late Aaron Coates and Zelia Rice Coates.
Rachel was a long-time member of the First Christian Church in Corbin, and a charter member of Beta Sigma Phi. She was a former member of the Corbin Ossoli Club, the Corbin Garden Club, and the First Christian Church Circle.
