A ‘Jacket Day’ Parade: WIS students get into the spirit of Thanksgiving

The parade was inspired by a book titled “Balloons Over Broadway,” which details the history of the iconic Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade.        

17th Annual W’burg Turkey Trot set for Thursday

If you want to get in some exercise before filling up on turkey, dressing and pumpkin pie on Thanksgiving Day while also donating some money to a good cause, then keep reading. The 17th Annual Williamsburg Turkey Trot 5-K run/walk will take place Thanksgiving morning. Last year, 348 people turned out for the race, which raised over $23,000. Proceeds from the race go to benefit the Williamsburg Police Department’s Shop with a Cop program, which takes less fortunate children on $100 Christmas shopping sprees at Walmart. University of the Cumberlands exceeds donation goal by more than 500 donors

One Big Give was a day to remember this year as donors shattered goals during the University of the Cumberlands’ annual giving event. Organizers had hoped to reach a goal of 2,024 total donors this year but had 2,692 donors express their support of Cumberlands by the end of the day. A total of $401,674 in donations will support scholarships, campus organizations, and athletics teams. “We are fortunate to be part of an organization so deeply committed to our students and to have the unwavering support of alumni, friends, and other advocates who share our vision,” said Dr. Larry L. Fire guts Goldbug home, but leaves prayer table and bible untouched

A Williamsburg family lost pretty much everything they owned during a late Wednesday afternoon blaze except for their prayer table and their bible that were untouched, according to fire officials. The fire at 2878 North US25W was first reported shortly after 5 p.m. with Williamsburg Fire Department responding to assist the Goldbug Volunteer Fire Department with the blaze that took place between Whitley Central Intermediate School and the entrance to Whitley County High School. Corbin City Manager offers updates on road construction projects

Corbin City Manager Scott Williamson gave the Corbin City Commission an update during Monday's regular monthly meeting about road construction work on state projects adjacent to Exit 25 and Exit 29. Williamson said that he met with the state highway engineer Friday regarding the projects. Williamson said that US25W work between the interstate on and off ramps at Exit 25 and the Corbin bypass is largely complete. Williamson said that state highway officials have now realized that a turn lane/U-turn lane will be needed at one or two spots because the newly constructed median prevents left hand turns in many places. CMS state champions made Corbin Colonel

Two days after they won the 2024 Eighth Grade Football Division II State Championship, the accolades continued to pour in for the Corbin Middle School team as it was named a Corbin Colonel during Monday’s monthly Corbin City Commission meeting. The team beat Paducah 14-8 Saturday to win the title. “Good job boys. This is Coach (Brent) Jackson’s ninth state championship, pretty amazing isn’t it,” said Corbin Mayor Suzie Razmus.

EKU president speaks about need for more doctors, additions to EKU Corbin campus

Kentucky, and particularly eastern Kentucky, has a real need for more physicians. Eastern Kentucky University President David McFaddin asked members of the Southern Kentucky Chamber of Commerce Tuesday afternoon to consider some of the following worrisome statistics about Kentucky counties, such as the fact that 94 percent have a shortage of primary care providers, eight have no physicians, 72 do not have an OBGYN and 50 counties have no pediatrician. He also noted some statistics about Kentucky physicians that are particularly concerning to our region of the state, such as the fact that only 17 percent of primary care physicians practice in rural areas and 75 percent practice in urban areas. UC food drive taking place Nov. 18-22, will benefit 8 local food pantries, initiatives

University of the Cumberlands is coming together as one with the community for its annual food drive to help feed people in need throughout Williamsburg in preparation for the holiday season. All community members, who would like to supply a much-needed meal for a local family, are welcome to drop off nonperishable food items on Cumberlands’ campus in the Office of Student Affairs, which is located on the top floor of the Boswell Campus Center. Financial donations are also welcome, as they will be used to purchase nonperishable foods in bulk for the community. Corbin Walmart holds ribbon cutting to celebrate remodel

Photo by TIMOTHY WYATT A store celebration and ribbon cutting event was held last Friday at the Corbin Walmart in southern Laurel County. The store recently underwent a remodel that saw a number of upgrades be added to the store. Among those in attendance for the ribbon cutting was Corbin Mayor Suzie Razmus, who thanked Walmart’s continued commitment to the local community by providing an exceptional shopping experience. Walmart has operated in Corbin since the original store was opened in 1989.

Several Veterans Day events lined up in Whitley County, including WCHS event Friday (Nov. 8)

With the approach of Veterans Day Monday, a handful of local Veterans Day ceremonies and activities are planned around Whitley County. Here is a partial list of events that are known to the News Journal. Whitley County High School Whitley County High School (WCHS) is inviting all military veterans to attend a Veterans Day ceremony on Friday, Nov. 8, at the school.
