The Whitley County Colonels got out to an early lead against the Corbin Redhounds in the championship game of this year's 13th Region baseball tournament, eventually going on to win by the final score of 7-1. The Colonels went up 4-0 in the top of the first inning Thursday evening at Corbin High School. The host Redhounds managed a single run in the bottom of the inning, but that was all the scoring that they could muster. Whitley, meanwhile, added runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings en route to their 7-1 regional championship victory. The University of the Cumberlands Patriots softball team are still chasing their dreams of winning a national championship title, coming into the 2023 NAIA World Series as the #3 overall seed. The Patriots softball team come into the World Series with a record of 47-3-1. They achieved a perfect record of 21-0 against Mid-South Conference opponents this spring to capture both the regular season and MSC Tournament championship titles. Cumberlands received the opportunity to host NAIA Opening Round games recently, going 3-0 against their opponents. On May 15, they outlasted University of South Carolina Beaufort, 3-2. For former Whitley County Colonels Jon Watson, Chase Harlan and Tyler Shelton, the dream of playing baseball at the collegiate level came true, and continues to come true, each time they suit up for their respective programs. Watson, who is a sophomore at Midway University in Midway, KY helped lead the Colonels to a 25-10 overall record as a high school senior in 2019, including an appearance in the 50th District finals and a 9-6 win over North Laurel in the first round of that year’s 13th Region tournament. After the 2019 high school baseball season, Zac Hash and the Corbin Redhounds baseball team were feeling very good about the future. With back-to-back 13th Region championships under their belt, many thought that the team would pull off the trifecta in the spring of 2020, bringing home their third consecutive regional title. On Monday, former Corbin Redhound Chase Estep was selected by the New York Mets with 269th overall pick in this year’s Major League Baseball draft. Estep was a standout athlete in baseball and football during his time at Corbin, helping lead the football Hounds to back-to-back KHSAA state championship appearances, and leading the charge for the baseball team as they won back-to-back 13th Region titles in 2018 and 2019. Williamsburg High School has seen many great athletes wear the orange and black throughout its history, but few have had the kind of impact on the baseball diamond as Jake Harrison and Cameron Bowen. Harrison, a 2018 graduate of WHS, helped lead the baseball Jackets to a 13th Region All “A” championship title his senior season.
