Several important district contests took place Tuesday night in coverage area high school hoops action. In Williamsburg, the Lady Jackets and Yellow Jackets made the trip across town to face the Whitley County Lady Colonels and Colonels. In the girls' game, Whitley won by the final score of 54-30, improving them to 14-9 on the season, 2-3 in district play. The Lady Colonels' final regular season district contest will take place Monday, Feb. 12, when they host the Corbin Lady Hounds (14-8, 4-1). With Tuesday's loss, the Lady Jackets fall to 4-14, 0-5. Williamsburg Yellow Jackets hoping to capitalize on their close proximity to 2024 All ‘A’ venue

When it was announced last year that the All “A” Classic state tournaments would be played in Corbin for the very first time, participating schools in the tri-county area began contemplating what it would be like to play in the event here at home, instead of having to travel to Richmond. This week, one area team, the Williamsburg Yellow Jackets, will have the opportunity to find out. The Jackets, coached by Anthony Hibbard, earned the right to be a part of this year’s All “A” state tournament by defeating Barbourville, Oneida Baptist Institute and Harlan to win the 13th Region All “A” title earlier this month. They followed that up...

The Yellow Jackets, now 10-9, 1-2, will shift their focus onto the 2024 All "A" state tournament later this week. For a full preview of that event, be sure to...

Annual Cumberland Falls Invitational Tournament at Corbin HS this week

On Wednesday, the Annual Cumberland Falls Invitational Tournament kicks off at Corbin High School. As usual, a talented field of teams promises to deliver some first-rate roundball action. On opening day, the 16th Region’s Boyd County Lions will kick things off against the 6th Region’s Western Warriors at 6:30 p.m. The 8-2 Lions will come into this matchup as the heavy favorites on paper considering the Warriors currently stand at 1-7, but Western has probably played a tougher schedule up to this point, so anything could happen. In the late game Wednesday, it’ll be a battle of the hounds when the host Redhounds take on the Paris Greyhounds out of the...

Colonels to welcome in large field of teams next week for Borderline Classic

Next week, the first-ever Borderline Classic is set to tip off at Whitley County High School and the University of the Cumberlands. For three straight days, teams from Kentucky, Tennessee and Florida will compete with each other in JV and varsity boys high school basketball action. The host Whitley County Colonels will, of course, be taking part in the Borderline Classic, as will the Lynn Camp Wildcats. One other team from the 13th Region, the Barbourville Tigers, will be there as well. The Colonels, who are just coming off of a two-day trip to Knightstown, Ind. where they got the unique opportunity to play inside the historic Hoosier Gym, will...

High School Basketball Preview: Lynn Camp Lady Cats

This year’s Lynn Camp Lady Wildcats High School Basketball Team will look a lot different from last year’s squad (6-25) with the departure of five seniors from last year’s team, including the top rebounder and top three scorers, who combined for 832 of the team’s 1,309 total points last season. “It is a rebuilding year,” noted second year coach Joshua Mobley. This year’s team has eight players returning from last year’s squad, and is young with no seniors and only two juniors, who are both relative new comers. While they played in the past, neither played last season. The remainder of the squad is composed of seven sophomores, including a handful that...

High School Basketball Preview: Lynn Camp Wildcats

In many ways, this season will be a rebuilding year for the Lynn Camp High School Boys’ Basketball Team, which has a first year head coach and graduated six seniors, including its two leading scores from last year’s squad, which finished the year with a disappointing 5-24 record with losses in 16 out of its final 17 games. “It being my first year, it is definitely a rebuilding year. Anywhere you go into in your first year, you are rebuilding it and restructuring it the way that you want it. You could say this is a rebuilding. It is kind of like a holding it together year. You are trying...

High School Basketball Preview: Corbin Redhounds

Last year, Head Coach Tony Pietrowski’s Corbin Redhounds only had a handful of days together before playing in their first game of the season. With several players also participating in the 2022 state football championships, it took some time for the team to find its rhythm once everyone was able to get together on the court. This year, the football Hounds were eliminated in round three of the state championship playoffs. Obviously, everyone at Corbin High School, Pietrowski included, would have preferred to see the team make another run to the state finals, but since that will not be the case, the idea is to take a negative and turn...
