The Corbin Redhounds football team enjoyed much success during the first half of their 2022 campaign, going 5-0 and securing wins over opponents such as Pikeville, Pulaski County and Somerset. During their five victories so far this season, the Redhound offense has amassed some impressive numbers. Quarterback Kade Elam has thrown for nearly 700 yards, and has rushed for just under 300. Meanwhile, Cameron Combs has rushed for over 400 yards, and Carter Stewart is currently averaging over 50 yards a game receiving. With three road losses, it was a tough week for coverage area football teams. The Williamsburg Yellow Jackets tasted defeat for the first time this season, dropping to 3-1 after a 38-28 loss at Somerset. The Jackets will travel again next week to play at Sayre. While Williamsburg had their hands full with the Briar Jumpers, the Whitley County Colonels were in action just a short distance away, at Pulaski County High School. The Corbin Redhounds remained perfect on the year in week 5, soundly defeating the Somerset Briar Jumpers, 45-7. The Hounds are now in a bye week before returning to action at Simon Kenton on Sept. 30. The Lynn Camp Wildcats were also successful in week 5, grinding out an 8-6 win over Jackson County. The victory breaks a three-game losing skid for the Cats, who will travel again on Sept. 23 to face Cumberland Gap (Tenn.). The Corbin Redhounds battled it out in week 4 with the Pulaski County Maroons, securing a 24-21 victory to remain unbeaten on the year. Pulaski came to Corbin Friday night with a 3-0 record, including wins over Belfry and Wayne County. By handing the Maroons their first loss of the season, the Redhounds have proved beyond a doubt that they deserve to be in the conversation about current best teams in the state. Also remaining undefeated on the year so far were the Corbin Redhounds, who went on the road for the first time this season and picked up a 40-20 win at Franklin County. Week 2 of the 2022 high school football season is in the books, and two area teams remain undefeated. The Corbin Redhounds moved to 2-0 on the season with a 42-13 win over visiting Whitley County in this year's Grace Health Bowl. They will look to keep their win streak alive next week when they travel to play Franklin County. The 2022 high school football season opened up Friday, and all of the News Journal coverage area teams were in action. It was a big night for the Corbin Redhounds as they hosted the Annual Cumberland Falls Pigskin Classic at Campbell Field. In game one of the Classic, the Williamsburg Yellow Jackets managed to outlast Oneida, TN, defeating the Indians 28-27 to start the season off at 1-0. The Jackets will host Middlesboro next week. In his second year at the helm of the Whitley County High School football program, Head Coach Zeke Eier feels that the Colonels are headed in a positive direction going into the 2022 season. “Last year we were really young,” Coach Eier explained. “A majority of the guys that we started hadn’t played any varsity reps before.” This time around, Eier and his staff are excited about the fact that they are fielding a much more experienced team, saying, “We have really good junior and senior classes. After opening the season 0-9 in 2021, Lynn Camp was forced to forfeit its final two games due to a limited number of available players. The Wildcats also were forced to forfeit their first game of the season, and their fifth game of the season, due to COVID-19 protocol. It was the second consecutive season that Lynn Camp finished winless, with its 2020 schedule torn to shreds due to COVID-19.
