The Williamsburg Yellow Jackets and the Whitley County Colonels were both in action in London Friday night. The Jackets met up with Bourbon County in game one of a two-game bowl at South Laurel High School. This was Williamsburg's season opener, and they were successful, winning, 38-20. Next week, they will host the Clay County Tigers in the Annual Alumni Bowl. This particular Alumni Bowl will be extra special, because it will be the first game held at the newly remodeled stadium at WHS. The Williamsburg Yellow Jackets ended the 2023 regular season with a 5-4 record, eventually falling in the playoffs to the perennial powerhouse Pikeville Panthers, but there was still plenty to celebrate. The Jackets outshined most of their district rivals last year, outscoring Pineville, Lynn Camp and Harlan by a combined 136-20, which featured a 50-0 rout of Lynn Camp. To find the last time that the Lynn Camp Wildcats enjoyed a winning season you have to go back to B.C. (Before COVID), in 2018. That year, the Cats finished with an overall record of 10-2, including district wins over Pineville and Harlan, and a 43-20 first-round playoff win over Phelps. Things have not gone too well since. In 2019, Lynn Camp finished 5-6, although one of those victories was a first-round playoff win over Pineville. Last season, the Whitley County Colonels High School football team didn’t have a lot of depth, only playing 13-15 people most games. “That hurt us probably finishing some of those games. We ran out of gas a few times,” noted Head Coach Matt Rhymer. “This year, I think we can play closer to 22-25 kids. We have upped the depth probably 10 or 12 kids. The Corbin Redhounds’ newest head coach, Luke Salmons, has only been in town for a few months, but in that short amount of time he says that he has managed to develop strong relationships with his players and in the local community. “With me, it’s all about the relationships,” Salmons said recently. “I want our kids to understand that this is their team. It’s not my team. I am just there to guide and help them. I want it to be player driven, because if it means more to them, then it’ll make them better. On Monday, a special reception was held at Campbell Field in Corbin for the Redhound football program’s newest head coach, Luke Salmons. Salmons comes to Corbin from Cabell Midland High School in West Virginia, where he led that school’s varsity football program to a combined record of 118-37 across 13 seasons. The Corbin Independent School District announced Wednesday that they have hired Luke Salmons to be the next head coach of the CHS varsity football program. "CISD has agreed in principle with Coach Luke Salmons from Cabell Midland High School (West Virginia) to be the next head coach of the Redhounds," said a statement from the district. "More information will follow in the coming days, and a reception to welcome Coach Salmons and his family to Redhound Nation will take place next week." After four years as the head coach of the Corbin High School varsity football program, Tom Greer has announced his resignation.
