After round one playoff games on Thursday and Friday, two coverage area high school football teams are left standing. On Thursday, both the Whitley County Colonels and the Lynn Camp Wildcats saw their 2023 campaigns come to a close with a pair of losses on the road. The Colonels traveled to Boyle County, falling to the defending Class 4A state champion Rebels by the final score of 41-6. Meanwhile, the Wildcats fell to Middlesboro in the first round of the Class A playoffs, 51-8. Whitley County went 5-6 this season, losing in their last four outings. Regular season district play wrapped up Friday, with two coverage area teams picking up wins... The Corbin Redhounds had no trouble against the visiting Perry County Central Commodores, winning 55-0 to finish out the regular season with a perfect 9-0 record. The Hounds will be on bye next week ahead of their first round contest in this year's Class 4A playoffs. The Whitley County Colonels also hosted a district game Friday, falling 35-31 to the Letcher County Central Cougars. With the loss, Whitley is 5-4 overall on the season. Since the 2015 season, with the exception of 2020’s covid cancellation, the Whitley County Colonels and the Corbin Redhounds have met on the gridiron in an annual game played for bragging rights in the county. So far, the Hounds have dominated the series, compiling a 7-0 record against the Colonels. Things are going to mean a whole lot more now, however, with both teams competing in the same district for the first time. The Williamsburg Yellow Jackets won their fourth game in a row and improved to 4-2 overall with a 50-0 shutout victory over the visiting Lynn Camp Wildcats (2-5). The Jackets will kick off a three week road tour to finish out the regular season next week when they travel to face the Yellow Jackets of Middlesboro (5-2). The Corbin Redhounds overcame a slow start to extend their current undefeated streak out to six games with a 34-6 victory over the visiting Johnson Central Golden Eagles. The Jackets will be back at home again next week to open up district play against the 1-5 Pineville Mountain Lions. Many words could be used to describe the events of Friday night, Sept. 15, in Corbin. Thrilling. Historic. Moving. And, perhaps most appropriate, poetic. Just days after the announcement of the passing of one of the greatest Corbin High School athletes of all-time, Coach Roy Kidd, the Redhounds rose up to defeat the Class 6A Frederick Douglass Broncos, who were crowned state champions in Class 5A last year, by the final score of 6-0. Two games took place in Williamsburg Friday, with the Williamsburg Yellow Jackets hosting the Waggener Wildcats and the Whitley County Colonels hosting the South Laurel Cardinals. The Yellow Jackets picked up their first win of the season, improving to 1-2 on the year with a 44-27 victory over the visiting Wildcats.
