Brentley Perry signs with Cumberlands basketball

On Thursday, April 7, the University of the Cumberlands men’s basketball program gained a very talented local player when Barbourville High School senior Brentley Perry signed his letter of intent to become a Patriot this fall. Perry helped lead the Tigers to 14 wins and an appearance in the 13th Region tournament this past season. He and sophomore teammate Markelle Turner proved to be a dangerous combination on the court, with each of them possessing the ability to seemingly score at will. The date of April 6th, 2016 will now be etched into the mind of University of the Cumberlands (UC) Baseball Head Coach Brad Shelton along with many members of the Patriots baseball program for a lifetime. There were heightened emotions on each end of the spectrum last Friday night at Williamsburg’s Briar Creek Park. On the baseball side, it was the elation of a thrilling comeback win in the bottom of the seventh inning. Over at the softball field, it was the despair of losing a heart breaker in extra innings. Reelin’ Redhounds: Brown fishes Bass Pro Southern Open, KHSAA state qualifier set for April 23

Corbin’s Matt Brown traveled to Jasper, AL over the weekend to compete in the 2016 Bass Pro Shops Southern Open, placing 20th out of nearly 180 anglers and earning almost $3,000 in cash winnings. Brown will be entering other Bassmaster Open tournaments in the coming months in hopes of qualifying for Elite status. He will be joining the nationally ranked Bryan College fishing team in Dayton, TN this summer to begin preparations for his collegiate fishing career. Remembering a KY high school basketball legend: Freddie Maggard

This From the Sidelines column appeared in the April 6 edition of the News Journal: Before this past week I was not aware of the name Freddie Maggard, but I have become very familiar with the Kentucky high school basketball legend since he passed away Sunday at Baptist Health Corbin after succumbing to pneumonia and heart failure. He was 78-years-old. Maggard was a member of the Carr Creek Indians (Knott County) basketball team that won a state championship in 1956. In this week’s second Senior Spotlight, we meet another group from Corbin – the track and field seniors. There are many familiar faces in this group, including Candice Gulley, who recently completed her final season in a Lady Hounds basketball uniform. SHELTON WINS 500TH BASEBALL GAME AT CUMBERLANDS

On March 29th, the University of the Cumberlands (UC) Baseball team defeated the Berea College Mountaineers in a single game matchup by a score of 7-5. With the win, Head Coach Brad Shelton earned his 500th win during his illustrious coaching career at University of the Cumberlands. Hitting the 500 win mark will rank him second in wins in Cumberland Baseball history, and only puts him two wins behind all-time wins leader Coach Terry Stigall. Shelton has an overall coaching record of 689 wins and 371 losses with a win percentage of .650. Shelton's 500 wins at Cumberlands, entering the 2015-16 season, ranks him 10th all-time in Kentucky Collegiate Baseball...
