Wildcats hoping to put together first winning season since 2018

To find the last time that the Lynn Camp Wildcats enjoyed a winning season you have to go back to B.C. (Before COVID), in 2018. That year, the Cats finished with an overall record of 10-2, including district wins over Pineville and Harlan, and a 43-20 first-round playoff win over Phelps. Things have not gone too well since. In 2019, Lynn Camp finished 5-6, although one of those victories was a first-round playoff win over Pineville. In the COVID season of 2020, the Cats went winless at 0-6, with four games being canceled due to the pandemic. In 2021, the LCHS football program was hopeful for a fresh start under...

Increased roster depth should help Whitley County improve this season

Last season, the Whitley County Colonels High School football team didn’t have a lot of depth, only playing 13-15 people most games. “That hurt us probably finishing some of those games. We ran out of gas a few times,” noted Head Coach Matt Rhymer. “This year, I think we can play closer to 22-25 kids. We have upped the depth probably 10 or 12 kids. A big emphasis for us this off season was really focusing on guys, who could get in and get some reps for us, learn what they are doing, get stronger and have confidence to be able to put in the game. I really hope that...

Salmons says expectation is to ‘win every game’ as Hounds kickoff new era

The Corbin Redhounds’ newest head coach, Luke Salmons, has only been in town for a few months, but in that short amount of time he says that he has managed to develop strong relationships with his players and in the local community. “With me, it’s all about the relationships,” Salmons said recently. “I want our kids to understand that this is their team. It’s not my team. I am just there to guide and help them. I want it to be player driven, because if it means more to them, then it’ll make them better. I think they’ve embraced that.” Salmons said that making the move to Corbin this summer from...

Overcoming Obstacles: Josh Grubb’s journey from near-death to cross country team captain

“I believe that God spared my life for a reason, and it wasn’t to just sit down and accept what had happened to me. It was to overcome it.” Those are the words of Josh Grubb, the soon-to-be senior at Whitley County High School who less than a year ago was clinging to life after he sustained horrific injuries in a tragic head-on car crash that left several others injured and took the life of one person in another vehicle. Grubb was a passenger in the back seat of the car that he was in. He and some friends had been on a hiking trip earlier in the day, and...

Patrick, Yellow Jackets host youth baseball camp at Briar Creek Park

This week, the Williamsburg Yellow Jackets varsity baseball team hosted a youth baseball camp at Briar Creek Park. In addition to teaching young players the basics of the game, Head Coach Brennen Patrick said that it’s also about establishing relationships that will benefit the program in the years to come. “We want to give something back to the community, and give something to these kids who will be coming up soon,” said Patrick. “These kids will be our future.” Patrick and his assistants, including some current Yellow Jacket players, have welcomed in between 30-40 campers this week. Some of those attending were part of this summer’s recently concluded Little League season. “I...

CHS student-athlete selected to serve on KHSAA Student Advisory Council

Being a student-athlete can potentially open doors to new and exciting opportunities for growth and development. Case in point, the Kentucky High School Athletics Association’s (KHSAA) Student Advisory Council. This group is comprised each year of promising young men and women from across the state, and in 2024-25 it includes Corbin High School’s own Haley Carr. “The school has to nominate you, then there is an application process and a Zoom interview,” explained Carr, who is a tennis player soon-to-be beginning her senior year at CHS. Carr said that her appointment to the KHSAA Student Advisory Council will last for a year, and that she got to meet her fellow council...

Jones focused on establishing ‘values-driven program’ as new CHS volleyball head coach

After a frustrating 2023 campaign that saw the team come up short in both the 50th District and 13th Region championship tournaments, the Corbin High School volleyball Hounds are eager to right the ship and get back on top under the guidance of first-year Head Coach Krystal Jones. “These girls are fighters, and they’re ready for a new season,” said Jones, who transitioned last year from coaching at the middle school level to serving as an assistant for the varsity team. The volleyball Hounds were hit hard by graduation last year, losing four very solid players in Darcie Anderson, Haleigh Black, Kallie Housley and Bailey Stewart, but Jones said that she...

Soccer coaches encouraged after ‘Brazilian Way Soccer Camp’ experiences

Between July 10-13, about 400 high school student-athletes from across the state converged on the campus of Lindsey Wilson College in Columbia, Ky. for Coach Paulo Neto’s Brazilian Way Soccer Camp. Included on the list participating programs were the Corbin and Whitley County boys teams, both of whom are hopeful for a strong showing in the upcoming 2024 season. “I thought that we had a really good camp experience compared to last season,” said Roger Taylor, who is coming into his second year as head coach of the Corbin Redhounds. “We will be returning most of our starters. The core of the team is still there, unlike last year, where...

KHSAA announces rules changes for coming school year

On Monday, the Kentucky High School Athletic Association (KHSAA) announced some rules changes via its social media accounts and on the khsaa.org website. One rule change dealt with high school baseball, and read: Players using non-wood bats will have greater flexibility in using substances to enhance their grip on the bat with a change that brings consistency to Rule 1-3-2. This rule revision was one of two proposed by the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) Baseball Rules Committee after its annual rules meeting held June 2-4 at The Alexander hotel in Indianapolis. The rules changes were accepted by the NFHS Board of Directors and are effective with the...
