Corbin Public Library may serve as site of census worker training

The Corbin Public Library Board will have one and possibly two new members. At Thursday regular board meeting, the members voted on secret ballots to make recommendations to the Corbin City Commission on two members. The seats belong to Brenda Jones and Thelma “Frankie” Sasser. While Jones was listed on the ballot for her seat, board members noted that Sasser was not seeking another term. “She cited health concerns,” said Library Director Donna Chadwell. The results of the vote will be forwarded onto Mayor Willard McBurney who will make the recommendations to the city commission. Woodbine, Oak Grove, Rockholds firefighters save burning trailer

Firefighters from three departments spent three hours Saturday battling a structure fire that damaged a home on McNeil Corn Creek Road. Woodbine, Oak Grove and Rockholds firefighters were called to the scene off of Ky. 1064 about 6 p.m. Woodbine Battalion Chief Rickie Fore described the structure as two singlewide mobile homes that had been pulled together and then had additions constructed. “It was fully involved when we got there,” Fore said. Fore said while the fire damaged the kitchen and living room areas, firefighters were able to keep it from reaching two of the bedrooms. “There is a lot of smoke and heat damage throughout, but it is still standing” Fore said. CHH Biomedical Course, Human Body Systems career pathway students receive white coats

More than 100 Corbin High School students in the Biomedical Course, Human Body Systems career pathway received their white lab coats during a ceremony Monday night. The coats were awarded to sophomores, juniors and seniors who had begun their second class. “The white coat symbolizes the work, integrity, and dedication that each student has demonstrated to reach this level. It also provides a useful safety tool for them to wear during each lab,” said Corbin High School Science Teacher Marsee Huffman. Whitley County celebrating bicentennial with birthday party

Whitley County is celebrating its 200th anniversary this year, and county officials held a birthday party Thursday afternoon to celebrate, complete with a birthday cake and everything. “We are celebrating 200 years of Whitley County’s existence. This is the bicentennial,” Whitley County Judge-Executive Pat White Jr. said Thursday afternoon. “It actually occurred yesterday, but we put off the festivities due to the snow storm and some of the road conditions yesterday.” On Jan. 17, 1818, the Kentucky General Assembly passed an act ordering the creation of Whitley County. John ‘Crow” Fletcher dies at age 85

A former Corbin High School teacher and coach passed away January 1 at age 85. John “Crow” Fletcher came to Corbin in 1964 to coach basketball and baseball and teach history. He retired in 1997 after 33 years of service to the community. Diane Mitchell, who taught English at Corbin, had a classroom just down the hall from Fletcher. “I can remember him coming in to school in the morning with a Moon Pie and an RC Cola,” Mitchell said. “He was a wonderful person,” Mitchell added explaining that their paths frequently crossed in the community following their teaching days as Fletcher was involved with the food pantry at First Baptist Church while...

New programs designed to ready children for kindergarten

Whether it is learning writing or arithmetic, teachers agree that a student’s proficiency in reading is essential to understanding and grasping the knowledge. A new parent/child group has been established in Whitley County with the goal of preparing children that will soon be enrolled in kindergarten with the knowledge and social skills they will need to be successful from day one. One of the most common New Year’s resolutions is to lose weight and help with the exercise portion is available beginning Thursday night as the “Dance to Be Fit” begins at The Corbin Center. Woodbine woman facing drug trafficking, possession charges

A Woodbine woman is facing multiple charges after Laurel County Sheriff’s deputies located assorted drugs, paraphernalia, cash and someone else’s EBT card inside her vehicle during a traffic stop in north Corbin early Sunday morning. Forty-one-year-old Lisa Gail Johnson was charged with first-degree trafficking in a controlled substance – methamphetamine, four counts of possession of a controlled substance, two counts of illegal possession of a legend drug, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of marijuana, knowingly fraudulently using id card or electronic codes for benefit and assorted traffic-related offenses. Corbin man arrested after high-speed chase in Gray, Woodbine

A Corbin man, whom police wanted to question in connection with a burglary, is facing multiple additional charges after leading police on a high-speed chase last Thursday night. Kentucky State Police Trooper Sammy Faris arrested 38-year-old Christopher Disney following a pursuit that began at Cross Road Market in Gray and ended on Ky. 3606 in Woodbine. Faris wrote in the arrest citation that he had received a tip that Disney could be found at the Cross Road Market at the intersection of Barbourville Highway and Ky. 233. Gray man accused of violating his parole

Knox County Sheriff’s deputies apprehended a Gray man Monday who is wanted for violating parole in Tennessee. Deputy William Stewart, the department’s public affairs officer, said Sheriff Mike Smith and Sergeant Carl Bolton went to a residence on Hazel Fork Road off of U.S. 25E where Kenneth McMurray, 42, was reportedly located. While McMurray was not there at the time, Stewart said Smith received information approximately two hours later that McMurray had returned. “Deputies Claude Hudson and Sam Mullins rushed the residence and apprehended Kenneth as he attempted to flee on foot,” Stewart stated.
