Precautions taken after CMS student receives ‘vague’ threat via text message Wednesday

A vague “threat” accidentally sent via text message to a Corbin Middle School student Wednesday caused police to take cautionary measures before the start of the school day. Hannah Goins, a spokesperson for the Corbin Independent School District, said the message was apparently meant for a student in a different local school district. The student that received it notified a school official, who then handed it over to a school district resource officer. “We had the police check everyone’s bag before they came into the school as a precaution,” Goins said. “We were not under any threat.” School officials sent out a short message regarding the incident via the school district's mass...

Woman attacked in woods with baseball bat

The Laurel County Sheriff’s Department is investigating allegations that a man beat a woman with a baseball bat in a wooded area near Corbin last Friday evening. The incident apparently occurred at about 7:00 p.m. in the woods near Dorthae Road about nine miles south of London. Deputy Rick Cloyd was dispatched to the complaint. When he got to the scene he learned from the 36-year-old female victim that her baby’s father was responsible for the assault. She was transferred to Baptist Health Corbin for treatment of her injuries, and later transferred by helicopter to the University of Kentucky Medical Center in Lexington. The Lion's Chase has continued to grow in popularity each year of its existence. Athletes of all ages come from far and wide each September to test their mettle against the rugged terrain and grueling obstacles that are featured in this outdoor race. Deputy finds meth lab at Emlyn home

Whitley County Sheriff's deputies discovered an active one-step methamphetamine lab at an Emlyn residence late Saturday afternoon. About 5 p.m., Deputy Jonas Saunders went to the US25W South residence about four miles south of Williamsburg after getting an anonymous tip that a meth lab might be there, according to court documents and a sheriff's department release. When Saunders arrived at the residence, he made contact with Robert Charles Trabish Jr., 32, who was the only one there at the time. Trabish gave police permission to search the residence and Saunders discovered the meth lab under the porch steps behind the trailer, according to the arrest citation. Glennis Reed Nantz charged in High Top boat ramp robbery, burglaries

About the same time his son was allegedly trying to elude Whitley County Constable Dorman Patrick, Jr. Saturday night, 44-year-old Glennis Reed Nantz was having his own run-in with the law stemming from the burglaries and robbery on Aug. 27 at the High Top boat ramp. According to Whitley County Sheriff Colan Harrell, Deputy Brian Hensley had obtained an arrest warrant for Nantz in connection with the incident in which one individual reported being robbed at knifepoint and three vehicles were burglarized. Corbin Primary recruiting volunteers for ‘DOGs’ program

Corbin Primary School is recruiting volunteer watch DOGs for the school. The school’s Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) has initiated the Dads On Guard (DOGs) program to bring father and father figures into the school and interact with the students. “We want them to volunteer to come into the building and have a presence,” said Assistant Principal Tonya Proffitt, noting the faculty and staff at the K-2 school is primarily female. Proffitt said many of the more than 600 students lack a strong, positive male role model. “These dads can be that for them,” Proffitt said. Patrick completes 911 training program

Twenty-four law enforcement dispatchers graduated on Aug. 12 from the Public Safety Dispatch Academy at the Kentucky Department of Criminal Justice Training (DOCJT), including Brentley L. Patrick, Whitley County E-911. The graduates hail from communications centers across the state and comprise DOCJT's 107th telecommunications academy class, which first began in 1999. The five weeks of training consisted of 205 hours of academy instruction to satisfy mandated training requirements. Major training areas included identifying the role and responsibilities of the dispatcher, correct phone and radio procedures, handling emergency and non-emergency calls for service, emergency medical dispatch protocols and use of the state and national criminal databases. W’burg officer receives seatbelt enforcement award

The Kentucky Office of Highway Safety (KOHS) recently honored 146 law enforcement officers from 125 agencies across the Commonwealth for their efforts to increase the use of seat belts and child restraints in motor vehicles, including a Williamsburg police officer. The Governor's Occupant Protection Awards ceremony was held on July 28 at the Hyatt Regency in Lexington. Awards were presented to officers with the most occupant protection citations in each agency and division. There are six divisions, broken down by number of officers within the agency, and a division for Kentucky State Police. WCHS part of pilot freshman mentoring program

Most people can remember the awkwardness of being a high school freshman starting over as the low person on the totem pole at a new school and being not quite sure where to go and how to get there among other issues. A new pilot program at Whitley County High School is hoping to ease that transition for a group of incoming high school freshmen this year by grouping them with selected juniors and seniors, who will serve as mentors to the new freshmen.
