Corbin educator honored with 2026 Kentucky Teacher Achievement Award

Date:

Melanie Howard, a special education teacher at Corbin Primary School (CPS), has been honored with the 2026 Kentucky Teacher Achievement Award by the Kentucky Department of Education.

She is one of nine recipients statewide and one of three elementary teachers to receive this prestigious award.

In reflecting on her journey, Howard expressed, “The process of being selected as a finalist for Teacher of the Year has been both humbling and inspiring. It began with a nomination—something I never expected, but was incredibly honored to receive.”

This recognition highlights outstanding educators across the state who go above and beyond to help develop the next generation of leaders. Winners are now eligible to compete for the 2026 Kentucky Teacher of the Year, which will be announced in October.

Howard shared, “I was asked to reflect on my teaching philosophy, classroom practices, and the impact I strive to make as a special education teacher. I submitted a written application that included personal reflections, stories from my classroom, and insights into how I support and advocate for my students every day.”

The Kentucky Commissioner of Education, Robbie Fletcher, praised the award winners, stating, “These teachers are a shining example of the dedication and innovation educators are bringing to Kentucky classrooms each and every day.”

Howard noted that the selection process also included an interview panel where she had the chance to speak about the joys and challenges of teaching, particularly in the field of special education. “It was a chance to share what drives me as an educator and why I believe in the potential of every student, regardless of their unique learning needs,” she added.

Being named a finalist, Howard explained, “is an incredible honor—one that has made me pause and reflect on the journey, the growth, and the countless individuals who have shaped me into the teacher I am today.”

All nine teachers will be honored during a ceremony in Frankfort on Oct. 7, where KDE will announce winners of the elementary, middle, and high school teaching divisions. From those three finalists, one will be named the 2026 Kentucky Teacher of the Year, who will represent the state in the National Teacher of the Year competition.

Howard emphasized the collaborative spirit of this recognition, saying, “This recognition isn’t just about me; it’s a celebration of the students who inspire me, the families who trust me, and the colleagues who support and challenge me every step of the way.”

All award recipients will receive cash prizes, with the overall Kentucky Teacher of the Year receiving $10,000 and a six-month sabbatical with KDE during their year as an ambassador of the teaching profession.

KDE received 753 teacher nominations this year, a 42% increase from the previous year, and the judging was conducted by a blue-ribbon panel of veteran educators from across the state. Applications included information on nominees’ teaching philosophies, experiences, and community involvement, as well as letters of recommendation from peers, students, families, administrators, and others.
