A Corbin man who purchased a vehicle from a local dealership was charged with theft when the salespeople called wanting it back because he had falsified his information.
Kentucky State Police arrested 44-year-old Johnny Helton Thursday morning on one count of theft by unlawful taking of the value of $10,000 or more but less than $1 million following the complaint by officials at USA RV and Auto Sales in Corbin.
According to Trooper Lloyd Cochran, public affairs officer at Post 11 in London, Helton purchased a Hyundai Sonata sedan from the dealership for $14,000.
However, when the information was found to be false, the dealership contacted Helton demanding he return the vehicle.
When Helton failed to return the vehicle, Cochran said state police were contacted and an investigation ensued.
Trooper John Pratt located Helton at Aisin Automotive in Lily and took him into custody.
Cochran said troopers have not yet recovered the car.
Helton is scheduled to be arraigned Friday in Laurel District Court.
Under Kentucky Law, the charge is a Class C felony, carrying a potential prison sentene of five to ten years.
