The Corbin Rotary Club met on Oct. 16 for their weekly meeting at David’s Steakhouse to officially welcome new member Coby Cima and hear from guest speaker John Baker, Director of Corbin Public Library (CPL).
Cima owns Real Financial, which is a financial service firm in Corbin. Cima is also an organizer for Main Street Mingle.
“We would like to officially welcome you into the Corbin Rotary Club, and it’s with great pleasure that we do that,” said Club President Todd Peeler.
Baker shared an overview of the CPL, the Carnegie Center of Corbin, Friends of the Corbin Public Library, and events occurring this month.
The Carnegie Center of Corbin was the original library for CPL, started by Andrew Carnegie.
“We’re trying to preserve the physical aspects of the building,” said Baker. “It’s an older building. I believe that 1916 is when it was first constructed. Very historical for Corbin.”
Baker informed the members of the Rotary Club of the Friends of the Corbin Public Library and encouraged new members.
“New members are always welcome,” said Baker. “It’s always nice to have new faces.”
Over the past weekend, the library hosted its Ghost Tour. The event included fun activities for all ages, such as the tour itself, ring toss, pumpkin painting, trivia, a magic show, coloring, and the fortune teller Madam Esmeralda.
Baker explained some of the things that CPL has to offer, such as free computers, 3D printing, meeting spaces for community groups, and the monthly meeting of “Adulting 101” workshops covering topics like balancing a checkbook and automotive maintenance.
“Everyone is welcome,” said Baker. “We want as many people to use the library as possible for multiple reasons.”
Baker invites readers to join their monthly newsletter by going to their website www.corbinkylibrary.org.
The club reminded its members that their Thanksgiving dinner is scheduled for Nov. 20 and needs items for goodie bags to be given to senior citizens.
The Southeast Kentucky Empty Stocking Fund is taking applications on Nov. 14 and 24 for this year’s gift giveaway at Old Corbin City Hall, the District Courtroom, next to Corbin Fire Department, 805 S. Main St., from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. each day.
The program provides Christmas gifts and essentials to children from Whitley, Knox, and Laurel counties. Parents will need to bring their valid IDs, proof of income, and any necessary assistance, including their food stamp award letter and the children’s Social Security cards.
The 38th annual Empty Stocking Fund party will take place on Dec. 20 at Immanuel Baptist Church. With questions, call 606-524-6475, according to the Corbin Rotary Club’s Facebook post.
Next week’s speaker will be Jacob Roan, the Assistant City Manager of Corbin.
