First Win

Whitley County won its first wrestling match of the season last week when the Colonels defeated Bourbon County, 47-36 in a meet at McCreary Central High School.
It was the first team win since the program was restarted last season and the first team win since the late 1990s.
The Colonels also took on McCreary Central, Letcher County Central, Wayne County, Franklin County and Bourbon County. Whitley County lost to host McCreary Central, 47-30, Letcher County 48-36 and Franklin County 42-36 in close matches. Wayne County tagged the Colonels with a 78-6 loss as Jaron Singley picked up the lone win for the Colonels in the 189-pound class.
Singley, a junior, led the Colonels with five wins on the day in his class. He finished the day with an unbeaten 5-0 record. in the 189-pound class. D.C. Evans was 4-1 in the 103 class while Nathan Chancellor was 4-1 in the 140-pound class.
Jacob Chancellor, Carl Petrey and James Kennedy finished 3-2 in the 145-pound, 160-pound and 171-pound classes.
Others participating were Joey Caddell (2-3), Jeff Couch (2-3), Andrew Root (1-0), Billy Maxwell (0-5), Jacob Janes (2-3) and Adam Gonzales (0-4).
Dusty Brown and Darrell Singley are serving as coaches for the 2005-2006 wrestling season.
“Last year three out of five wrestlers qualified for state with four of five returning,” said Singley. “This year we should have at least six, with a possibility of as many as ten.”
The Colonels will be in action tonight at Bourbon County in a duel meet with Bourbon County and Lexington Dunbar.
They will be at Wayne County Saturday for the Cardinal duals against Louisville Fern Creek, St. Xavier, Ryle, Letcher County and McCreary Central.
The following is the season’s schedule: Dec. 10 at Anderson County; Dec. 17 at Bourbon County; Dec. 22 at McCreary Central; Dec. 30 at Wayne County; Jan. 4 at Harrison County; Jan. 7 at Tates Creek; Jan. 14 at Bourbon County; Jan. 21 at Franklin County; Jan. 25 at Danville; Jan. 28 at Danville; Feb. 3 at Wayne County; Feb. 4 at McCreary Central; Feb. 11 at Regional Tournament at Sheldon Clark.
