Harold Duane “Rusty” Mays, a dedicated family man, loving father, and a cherished husband, passed away on November 4th, 2024, at age 67. Harold was born on September 18th, 1957 in Harlan County, Kentucky.
He was a proud U.S. Navy Veteran where he was deployed to Japan, Philippines, and the Pacific Theater, notably serving on the U.S.S. San Jose Combat Ship during his service. Harold was a passionate railroad worker until his retirement.
Harold’s dedication to service was not limited to his professional life, he was also a devoted member of the Dorthae Pentecostal Church in Corbin, Kentucky. He lived his life based on the teachings and principles of the Pentecostal faith. In line with his beliefs, we are reminded of the scripture, “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” (Psalms 34:18). Harold was also an avid sports fan and found great joy in following his grandchildren’s activities and achievements.
Harold is survived by his loving wife, Linda Mays; their son, Duane Mays; their daughter, Laura Leigh Davenport; and their grandchildren, Olivia and Brady Davenport. He is also survived by his mom, Jewell McKamey; siblings; as well as other family and friends who mourn his passing.
He is preceded in death by his adopted parents, George and Clara Mae Mays (grandparents); and his dad, Harold Cecil Mays.
The visitation will be held on Saturday, November 9th, from 5:00 pm until 9:00 pm at Croley Funeral Home.
The funeral service will take place on Sunday, November 10th, at 2:00 pm at the same location with Rev. Jerome Cox, Rev. Hoyt Caddell and Rev. Sean Disney officiating.
Harold will be laid to rest at Highland Park Cemetery Croley Addition, Williamsburg, Kentucky with military honors provided by American Legion Post 88 of Corbin, Kentucky.
