Local doctor pleads guilty to tax evasion, could get up to five years in prison

Date:

A London doctor who spent time working in the emergency room at Jellico Community Hospital has pleaded guilty to tax evasion.

Werner Grentz, 64, admitted in federal court in London that he failed to pay $900,068 in taxes since 1999 at a rearraignment hearing Thursday in U.S. District Court in London.

According to Kyle Edelen with the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Grentz admitted he made $356,073 in taxable income in 2009 while working as an independent physician contractor at Jellico Hospital and at a medical office in London.

In order to hide the money, Grentz stated that he deposited the money into bank accounts of companies that he controlled and did not file a tax return or pay any federal income taxes.

Grentz will return to court at 2:30 P.M., May 16 for formal sentencing. He is facing a maximum sentence of five years in prison.
