Students and families at Oak Grove Elementary School were hard at work for Valentine’s week, showcasing their creativity by decorating boxes for a contest.
“The purpose of the activity was so that students could be creative and show off those skills,” said Oak Grove art teacher LeAnne Huddleston.
Huddleston noted that students were permitted to receive assistance from an adult at home, and winners were selected by Oak Grove faculty and staff based on the creativity demonstrated.
The contest was open to students from preschool through sixth grade. Judges chose two winners per category: one from preschool to second grade and another from third to sixth grade.
The Valentine Box Decorating Contest featured several categories, allowing students to tailor their designs: Most Creative Box, Best Use of Recycled Materials, Best Animal-Themed Box, Most Colorful Box, Best Sports-Themed Box, Best Food-Themed Box, and Best Music-Themed Box.
Winners were as follows:
Most Creative – Gracie Manus and Dusty Philpot
Best Use of Recycled Materials – Amilia Jo Strunk and Olivia Worley
Best Animal Themed – Lucy Wilson and Weston Smith
Most Colorful – Claire Wilson and Jasper Thomas
Best Sports Themed – Braxton Chandler and Kade Wilson
Best Food Themed – Audree Manus and Dallas Meadors
Best Music Themed – Vaida Asher and Olivia Sherman
At the end of the event, students received their decorated boxes back, which were then used to collect valentines from classmates.
“I was incredibly proud of my students and the creativity they demonstrated with this project,” said Huddleston. “They showed their artistic talent, personality, and imagination with a lot of hard work.”
