Spring has sprung, check out what’s happening at the Falls

Date:

The overnight and early morning hours are still pretty chilly right now, but the days are getting warmer and the sun is shining until a little later in the evening with each passing day. That means that spring is finally upon us, and what better way to celebrate than to schedule some fun outdoor activities?

I have seen several announcements about happenings down at Cumberland Falls State Resort Park recently, and I thought this would be a good opportunity to pass a few of those along to our readers.

First, the park is currently hosting a free “12 Months of Trails Trek-a-Thon” program for anyone interested in trying to spend a little more time in nature.

This series began in January, and features one hike per month through December. The most recent, which took place on March 8, was an easy, 1-mile trek on Laurel Trail #3. The next hike is scheduled for April 19, and will feature another 1-mile walk on the CCC Memorial Trail #4.

There is no sign up required to participate in the “Trek-a-Thon.” Just show up in the lobby of the DuPont Lodge before 10 a.m. on the day(s) of the hike(s), and let a knowledgeable park naturalist serve as your guide for the next 1-2 hours. For a complete list of upcoming dates, check out the Cumberland Falls State Resort Park’s official Facebook page.

If you make it to the DuPont Lodge on April 19, then you might consider making a day out of it as the Knox-Whitley Humane Association will be hosting their “Tuxes and Tails” Spring Gala fundraiser event later that evening.

Tickets are limited, and are on sale now for $100 per person. All proceeds will go to benefit the animal shelter, located at 66 Busy Lane in Corbin.

To purchase an advance ticket, go to www.checkout.shelterluv.com/donate/KWHA. Select the $100 donation option, and then notate “Spring Gala Ticket” in the note section before submitting payment. Ticket will be delivered electronically.

Tickets for the gala will not be available at the door, so purchase them now if you would like to go. The event will feature live entertainment, a silent auction and refreshments. For more information, visit the KWHA online at www.knoxwhitleyhumane.org, find them on Facebook, or call (606) 526-6925.

Finally, I was excited recently to come across an announcement from the Kentucky State Parks system about a special buy one, get one promotion on campsites during the weekend of April 25-27. In honor of Camper Appreciation Weekend, if you book that Friday night you will get Saturday free. You can’t beat that!

Anyone who has read my columns with any regularity in recent years probably knows that I enjoy a good camping trip, so I will definitely be trying to take advantage of this half price opportunity. If you would be interested in learning more, go online to www.kentuckystateparks.reserveamerica.com, or call (888) 4KY-PARK.

As I type this column, representatives from Cumberland Falls State Resort Park are scheduled to speak at this week’s meeting of the Corbin Rotary Club. I am planning to attend that meeting Thursday afternoon at David’s Steakhouse, and I look forward to learning more about other happenings at the park.
