While it may not be the most talked about need, blood transfusions are vital for many cancer patients to help replenish their bodies after grueling chemotherapy treatments. They’re also critical aid for patients with blood cancers.
In total, approximately 25 percent of the nation’s blood supply helps patients fighting cancer.
Kentuckians can support the fight against cancer and help patients in their community by donating blood at a Kentucky Blood Center (KBC) drive in Williamsburg next week.
The University of the Cumberlands will host a blood drive on Tuesday, Oct. 22, from 10 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. at the KBC Bloodmobile, which will be located in the Wellness Parking Lot at the Boswell Building at 7327 College Station Drive.
In recognition of national awareness of cancer in September and October, all donors who give blood will receive a “Fight Cancer” T-shirt as a thank you for their lifesaving donation. In addition, every registered donor will receive a $5 Starbucks gift card.
Blood collected at this drive will save the lives of patients in Kentucky, who require products for surgeries, diseases like cancer, traumas, organ transplants, premature births and more.
Blood donors must be at least 17 years old (16 with parental consent), weigh at least 110 pounds, be in general good health, show a photo I.D. and meet additional requirements. Sixteen-year-old donors must have a signed parental permission slip, which can be found at kybloodcenter.org.
Appointments are preferred but walk-ins are welcome. To schedule a donation, visit kybloodcenter.org or call (800) 775-2522.
KBC is the largest independent, full-service, nonprofit blood center in Kentucky, and has been saving local lives since 1968. KBC provides services in 90 Kentucky counties and has donor centers in Lexington, Louisville, Frankfort, Pikeville, Somerset and the Tri-County area (Corbin).
