UPDATED: Police think elderly couple’s death may have been case of murder-suicide

Date:

Corbin police are investigating the death of an elderly Fifth Street couple, who were found dead Tuesday evening apparently from gunshot wounds, sources told the News Journal.

Neighbors identified the couple as Lloyd Walters, 93, and Mattie Walters, 85, who had lived at the home located at the intersection of Fifth Street and Lee Street for about 20 years.

Authorities are investigating the case as a possible murder-suicide. Both Lloyd and Mattie were found in the living room of their home. A gun was found along with a large bag of cash.

Sources also tell the News Journal note was found at the scene.

Neighbors said that they usually saw the couple every day, but that they hadn’t seen them since Saturday.

The couple’s mail and newspapers had pilling up at their home, and neighbors said that they usually saw Lloyd walking at least once a day. Neighbors reported that Lloyd usually raked his leaves daily, but that hadn’t seen him since Saturday. They say the couple tended to be very quiet.

Police first went to the home about 5 p.m. Tuesday to conduct a welfare check and shined lights in the window, but observed nothing unusual. Authorities apparently went back later in the evening, and found the couple dead inside their home.

Whitley County Coroner J. Andrew Croley was called to the scene, and arrived shortly after 10 p.m.

Mattie Walters had been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease within the last year and police had responded to the home several times after she wandered away. Neighbors said Lloyd struggled to deal with her condition and was considering nursing home care. The couple had been married about 50 years.

Funeral arrangements are being handled by Vankirk Funeral Home. A private graveside service is planned.
