Corbin woman charged with murder

Date:

Debra Poore is charged with murder in connection with a Feb. 9 stabbing at a Lois Lane residence.

A Corbin woman has pleaded not guilty in the murder of her boyfriend and is scheduled to Knox District Court Tuesday for a preliminary hearing to determine whether the case should be presented to the grand jury.

Fifty-four-year-old Debra Poore was arraigned Monday on one count of murder in connection with the incident Thursday night on Lois Lane in which Poore allegedly stabbed 57-year-old Steven Burke.

Kentucky State Police were called to the scene off of Lynn Camp School Road about 9:30 p.m. in response to a complaint that a female had assaulted a male subject.

Burke was pronounced dead at the scene.

KSP Detective Jacob Wilson, who is investigating the case, said that state police located Poore on Ky. 80 in Clay County after the car she was driving had run out of gas.

The car belonged to Burke’s deceased mother.

“The subject began to tell Trooper (Jared) Smith details of the assault,” Wilson stated. “The subject admitted to stabbing her boyfriend during a verbal dispute at their residence in Knox County.”

“The subject stated she was unaware of the condition of Steven,” Wilson noted in the arrest citation.

Trooper Shane Jacobs, public affairs officer at Post 10 in Harlan, said investigators are not releasing any additional information as it could possibly hurt the case.

This case would not qualify for the death penalty under Kentucky law.

The death penalty is an option only in cases that involve more than one victim or if another violent crime such as rape, robbery, or kidnapping is committed in concert with the murder.

Poore is being held in the Knox County Detention Center on a $250,000 cash bond.

Officials at Knox County Clerk Greg Helton’s office said Poore is scheduled to be arraigned Monday in Knox District Court.
