Friday Night Highlights: Week 2 High School Football Results

Two coverage area teams improved to 2-0 in week 2, and two more tasted defeat for the first time this season. The Corbin Redhounds went on the road Friday to face the North Laurel Jaguars in the late game of the Praxel Line Services Bowl. The Hounds received a test from the Jags, but were able to walk away with a 28-14 victory in the end. Next week, Corbin will once again be on the road when they travel to Lexington to take on the Bryan Station Defenders. Back home, the Whitley County Colonels hosted their home opener against the visiting Hazard Bulldogs. It was a tough night for the Colonels,...

Par for the Course: Golf balls… what’s the difference??

This week’s column is one I have been thinking about writing since I first launched the series back in January. As someone who has not had a ton of experience actually hitting golf balls, I have often wondered, “Is there really a need for so many different types of balls?” Let’s explore this further… Again, not being the most well-versed person in this particular topic, I decided to go online to give myself a crash course in golf ball science. I found a couple of pretty informative articles that helped to illustrate several things to me, including how golf balls are constructed, when a player should consider investing more money...

Jerry Herron entering 20th season as head coach of Yellow Jackets football program

“This is where I want to be and this is where I want to coach,” Jerry Herron said during a 2006 interview with the News Journal prior to the start of his first season as head coach of the Williamsburg High School Football Team. Often in sports, statements like this are merely “coach speak” or soundbites that head coaches give when they are hired for a new job only to move on a few years down the road to something bigger and better. In Herron’s case though, he really meant it when he said this is where he wants to be. This season marks Herron’s 20th season as head coach of...

Corbin’s schedule features toughest matchups in the region

To paraphrase professional wrestling legend Ric Flair, “To be the best you gotta beat the best.” The Corbin Redhounds have exemplified this motto year-in and year-out by scheduling some of the toughest competition in the state, and several teams from neighboring states as well. 2025 looks to be no different. Let’s take a week-by-week look at the road ahead… 2025 Cumberland Falls Pigskin Classic This year’s Pigskin Classic promises to be one of the very best in recent memory, with a pair of interesting matchups that should bring a large crowd out to Campbell Field. This year’s event will take place on Saturday, Aug. 23. Corbin Athletic Director Tackett Wilson expects moving...

Lynn Camp Wildcats still hunting for first winning season since 2018

In year three of the Head Coach Darrell Hendrix era, the Lynn Camp Wildcats are once again hoping to put more marks in the win column and end the season with their first overall winning record since 2018. The Cats will feature a solid group of veteran players this fall, including senior DJ Wren, who finished 2024 as the team’s leading rusher, and was their overall leading scorer. Wren was also the second-leading tackler on the defensive side of the ball last fall. While lack of depth on the roster has consistently been an issue at Lynn Camp over the years, if Hendrix’s starters can manage to stay healthy in the...

‘Tradition never graduates’ for Williamsburg football

Last season, the Williamsburg Yellow Jackets went 8-2 winning the district and advancing to the second round of the playoffs before falling to Hazard. The Jackets lost nine seniors from last year’s team to graduation, including starting quarterback Nate Goodin, who was also their leading rusher and accounted for more than 2,000 yards of total offense and 124 points, which was about one-third of the team’s total in 2024. Despite the loss of some key players, Coach Jerry Herron said his team will be ready to compete this season. “Our saying at Williamsburg is tradition never graduates. Our tradition is developing these players to step in. Nate was a phenomenal player as...

Whitley County coach excited about team’s development

After a 5-6 season in 2024 that ended with a one-score loss to Wayne County in the first round of the Class 4A state championship playoffs, Head Coach Matt Rhymer’s Whitley County Colonels are poised to take the next steps toward becoming a regional contender in 2025. “We have a lot of experience coming back,” Rhymer said recently. “This is year three for me and my staff, and the biggest thing that I’ve learned at this level is that it’s all about development. We have several guys this year who have been able to develop. Those guys, when I first met them, they were young and they weren’t ready. They’ve...

Par for the Course: Corbin’s Makena Myatt still on the ‘Road to Augusta’

Golf enthusiasts in the region are likely already well aware of the talent possessed by Corbin Lady Hound Makena Myatt. She has spent the last couple of years mixing it up against some of the state’s top young golfers as a middle schooler. Now, she is poised to continue her success as a freshman at CHS this fall season. Throughout the summer, she has continued to hone her skills, most recently achieving a major milestone in this year’s nationwide Drive, Chip and Putt youth development competition. According to the information found on its official website, www.drivechipandputt.com, the annual competition is “a joint initiative founded in 2013 by the Masters Tournament,...

Par for the Course: Comments from new WCHS girls golf head coach, Miss. State golfer offers useful advice

In the year 2000, Scott Bishop read a Golf Digest article on scholarship opportunities in girls golf. After asking the superintendent if Whitley County High School could start its own girls golf team, he was tasked with getting it off the ground. Bishop said that the early years were a struggle, but by the mid-2000’s the team was competing for, and winning, regional titles. In recent years, Bishop has served as an assistant coach and has offered private lessons. This year, he is once again being tasked with leading the Lady Colonels as head coach. “I am extremely excited and grateful for the opportunity,” he said. “It is going to...

Par for the Course: Austin Reynolds returns to CHS, taking the helm of Lady Hounds golf team

Austin Reynolds is excited to be back at his old stomping grounds as the new head coach of the Corbin High School girls golf team. As a member of the CHS Class of 2019, he played football and baseball for the Redhounds before going on to develop a love for golf after completing his undergraduate work at Union Commonwealth University, formerly Union College. “I had a buddy who said I should try it,” Reynolds said recently of getting involved with golf. “I have dedicated the last three-and-a-half years to getting good, and I love it now. It’s what I do with my free time.” Reynolds graduated from Union in 2022 with...
