Whitley Co. Middle School Gym getting new floor

For the first time in about 40 years, Whitley County Middle School is getting a new gym floor. During a special-called meeting late Thursday afternoon, the Whitley County Board of Education voted unanimously to approve the resurfacing of the gym floor. The board accepted a bid from Signature Sports Floor to install a new "rubber deck" gym floor. Superintendent Scott Paul said the current floor is the same one that he played on in middle school in 1979. "We certainly have gotten our money's worth out of this gym floor, but it is time to resurface it," Paul noted. "If it lasts another 40 years we will be in good shape." The Arena hosting ‘Celebrate America’ event July 3

Working in conjunction with the City of Corbin and Corbin Tourism and Convention Commission, the Corbin Arena is presenting a Celebrate America event on July 3 at the Arena. Festivities will include live music, featuring Timberline Road and County Wide beginning at 6:45 p.m. Fireworks are set to go off at 9:45 p.m. Timberline Road, who is set to open for the evening, is a newly formed band with a bluegrass and gospel sound. Soon to follow is the popular County Wide, a southern rock band with a country flare. ‘Golden Alert’ issued for Lily man

The Laurel County Sheriff’s Department has issued a “Golden Alert” for a 59-year-old Lily man. According to Sheriff John Root, Denver King reportedly left a residence on Old Slate Road in Lily in a maroon colored 2008 Ford F-250 pickup truck. While his destination is unknown, it is suspected that King may be headed to somewhere in Tennessee. King is described as a while male, 6’, 225 pounds, with blue eyes, and brown hair cut above the ears. King reportedly has mental issues. Anyone with information concerning King’s whereabouts is asked to contact the sheriff’s department at (606) 864-6600 or (606) 878-7000.

UPDATE: two arrests made in connection with Gray shooting, State Police seeking public’s help in search for Gray shooter

UPDATE: Two Corbin residents have been arrested in connection with a shooting Saturday in Gray, but as of Monday, no murder charges have been filed. Kentucky State Police Trooper Shane Jacobs, public affairs officer at Post 10 in Harlan, said police arrested 33-year-old Lawrence Collinsworth and 33-year-old Jennifer Folgman on charges of being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm. Collinsworth and Folgman each pleaded not-guilty to the charge Monday in Knox District Court. Judge John Chappel ordered Collinsworth to be held without bond in the Knox County Detention Center. Laurel deputies seek public’s help to find man accused of using stolen debit card

Public assistance is requested to identify a man that is accused of using a stolen credit card at Wal-Mart in southern Laurel County at approximately 6:04 a.m. Wednesday. Deputy Josh Scott, along with other deputies, of the Laurel County Sheriff’s Department have investigated several thefts of items from parked vehicles which have occurred in the Lily/Keavy area, including KY 552 and Rook’s Branch Road. According to a release by Sheriff’s John Root, two recent thefts occurred in those areas Wednesday morning. Road Department rescues trapped dog

It had a happy ending. When Becky Brewer's 60-pound treeing coon dog Lily went missing from her 80 Cannonade Trail home in Tattersall Trails Estates on Tuesday evening last week she looked everywhere, or so she thought. She put up fliers throughout the neighborhood. She went searching on adjacent streets but found nothing until late last Wednesday/early Thursday morning when she heard something and looked down, or rather, under the street. Truck slams into Corbin business Wednesday night

An East Bernstadt man walked away but a Corbin business wasn’t as lucky when a truck slammed into a building Wednesday night. CorbinPolice and firefighters were called to the intersection of 18th and Main Street about 9:30 p.m. in response to the single-vehicle wreck in which the 1998 Ford pickup truck went through the front of Cash Express. Former Cumberlands President files lawsuit against university over pay

Former University of the Cumberlands President Dr. James Taylor and his wife, Dinah, have filed a federal lawsuit against the university claiming school officials have gone back on an agreement to continue to pay his full salary and benefits for the rest of his life. In the lawsuit filed Tuesday in U.S. District Court, the Taylors claim that the university's trustees approved the agreement following a closed-door meeting in 2005, which amounted to at least $395,000, annually in salary and benefits. According to the complaint the deal was put into Taylor's contract in 2012. Taylor retired, from the university in October 2015 but retains the title of chancellor. University officials said in...

Suspect accused of swallowing evidence

A Williamsburg man is facing an evidence tampering charge after allegedly swallowing three grams of what is believed to be crystal methamphetamine during a traffic stop. About 11:58 p.m. on June 7, Williamsburg Police Officer Cody Jeffries conducted a traffic stop on a 2003 BMW for speeding on US25W South, according to a police department release. The vehicle was allegedly clocked going 41 mph in a 35 mph zone near the East-West gas station, Jeffries wrote on an arrest citation. After the vehicle stopped, Jeffries and Sgt. Burger Week: An event you can sink your teeth into

A week dedicated to the celebration of burgers has hit Main Street in Corbin. Monday was the opening day for Burger Week, a project initiated by The Corbin Tourism and Convention Commission in an effort to promote tourism in Downtown Corbin. All week long, locals and visitors have the opportunity to sample a variety of burgers from the participating restaurants on Main Street.
