West Knox firefighters face broken hydrant at scene of Saturday fire

West Knox and Lily firefighters called to battle a house fire on Lark Ave. Saturday morning were faced with a broken fire hydrant. West Knox Fire Chief Darryl Baker said firefighters hooked up the hydrant in the subdivision off of Oak Ridge Church Road about 2 a.m., but when they opened the valve to release the water, nothing happened. “It doesn’t happen very much,” Baker said of a broken hydrant noting he has seen it five or six times in his 30 years as a firefighter. Halloween trick or treating hours set locally

Trick or treating hours have been set Tuesday for local ghosts and goblins on Halloween. Trick or treating will take place between 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. in Williamsburg and Whitley County. Corbin has set trick or treating hours for 3:30 – 5:30 p.m. for Main Street, and from 6 – 8 p.m. for neighborhoods. Jellico has set trick or treating hours from 6 – 8 p.m. throughout the city, but a trunk or treat will be held in Veteran’s Park from 5 – 8 p.m. Knox County has set trick or treating hours for 5:30 – 7 p.m. Laurel County has set trick or treating hours for 6 - 8 p.m.

Final Corbin Community Yard Sale of the season set for Saturday

Whether you are looking for a bargain or attempting to convince bargain hunters that your stuff can be their stuff, Corbin’s final city yard sale of 2017 offers the opportunity. The monthly event will wrap up its season Saturday. Corbin Downtown Manager Andy Salmons said the event, held on Depot Street between Fourth and Gordon streets, is wrapping up its fourth season. “We have seen as many as 80 vendors and up to 600 people attend some of the sales this year,” Salmons said. Corbin man accused of exposing himself to bank employees

A Corbin man told the officer who arrested him Saturday morning on an indecent exposure charge that he was, “just being stupid.” Fifty-four-year-old David Lewallen was arrested just after noon for allegedly urinating in the drive through of a local bank and exposing himself. Corbin Police Officer Caleb Hester stated in the arrest citation that he was called to the location about 11:30 a.m. after a bank reported a male subject urinating outside the bank and shaking his genitals as the workers and others attending the drive through. A Corbin woman was injured Friday when her SUV slid off the slick roadway and went over an embankment. Whitley County Sheriff's deputies say Nicole Lawson was taken by ambulance to Baptist Health Corbin following the single-vehicle wreck on Ky. 511. Deputies and Oak Grove firefighters were called to the scene about two miles east of the intersection of Ky. 511 and U.S. 25W. Deputies said Lawson was traveling east on Ky. 511 when she lost control on the rain soaked roadway, spun around facing west and slid over the approximately 15-feet high embankment. Whitley Co. getting $6,212.50 state refund for mining permits, acreage fees

Gov. Matt Bevin announced Thursday that fiscal courts in 29 counties, including Whitley, Knox and Laurel, will receive refunds totaling $149,425 from mining permit and acreage fees. The amounts of refunds are based on acreage fees paid by coal companies. The Kentucky Department for Natural Resources collects mine permit and acreage fees and returns a portion of those fees to coal-producing counties for projects to be determined by the local fiscal courts. Whitley County is getting $6,212.50. Whitley County Projects Director Amber Owens said the money will be deposited into the county’s road fund. Knox County is getting $1,591.67. Union College, Barbourville Tourism hosting Gray mountain bike competition

Barbourville Tourism is gearing up for a new event in Knox County. On Saturday, Aug. 19, mountain bikers from across the region will travel to the area to take part in the Turner Outdoor Center MTB XC. Barbourville Tourism, along with the Union College Cycling Team and Kentucky Point Series, will host the event at Turner Outdoor Center, which located near the intersection of U.S 25E and Owens Hollow (KY 1527) in Gray. “If the weather is good, we anticipate around 100 riders coming in,” said Denise Wainscott, Director of Barbourville Tourism.
