‘Art in the Park’ set for Saturday at Nibroc Park

The Corbin Arts and Literary League’s “Art in the Park” will take place Saturday at Nibroc Park. The event features a variety of local artists displaying their works in various disciplines. All local artists are encouraged to attend. There is no setup fee. Whitley County BOE honors Accelerated Reader winners

Members of the Whitley County Board of Education recognized Accelerated Reader district point winners during their monthly meeting Thursday. First grader Parker Davis, second grader Micah Jones, fourth grader Chelsea Rein, fifth grader John Croley and sixth grader Kaylee Hamblin are all pictured along with school board members J.E. Jones, Larry Lambdin and Brenda Hill. Not pictured are kindergartener Macie Shelley and third grader Adalee Johnson, who were Accelerated Reader district point winners for their grades.

Corbin High School will be graduating its 100th class Sunday at The Arena

When Corbin High School seniors don cap and gown this Sunday and go through formal graduation ceremonies they will have a special distinction … they will part of the school’s 100th graduating class. The CHS graduation ceremony will be held at The Arena at 2:00 p.m. The public is invited to attend. Pay raises not in the works Whitley County teachers

For the most part, Whitley County school system employees won’t be getting any pay raises in the upcoming fiscal year, which begins July 1. During its monthly meeting Thursday, the Whitley County Board of Education approved the 2017-2018 tentative budget. Superintendent Scott Paul noted that the state legislature did not fund any pay raises this year. Chief Finance Officer Alicia Logan noted that there were few changes to the budget from what board members saw when they were first presented with an early draft of the budget in January. Three airlifted after Sunday wreck in Lily

Laurel County Sheriff’s deputies are investigating a three-vehicle accident late Sunday afternoon in Lily that resulted in three people being flown out by emergency medical helicopters due to serious injuries. The accident happened about 5:23 p.m. on US25 about four miles north of Corbin. A maroon colored Kia Optima was traveling east on Lily School Road when it attempted to cross US25 misjudging an approaching vehicle. The Kia Optima then collided with a northbound maroon colored Mazda Familia on US25. The Kia Optima then slid around and struck a black colored Chevrolet trailblazer that was stopped on US25 southbound attempting to make a turn, according to a sheriff’s department release. Two airlifted following Saturday wreck in Corbin

Two people were airlifted to the University of Tennessee Medical Center following a head-on collision on Cumberland Falls Hwy. Saturday night. Corbin Police Lt. James Miller said the crash occurred about 6:25 p.m. when a 2014 Lexus attempted to pass another vehicle travelling south on U.S. 25W near Bubby’s Barbecue and struck a pickup truck travelling north. Miller said the driver of the pickup, identified as 44-year-old Cecilia Simpson of Artemus, and the driver of the Lexus, identified as 37-year-old Jeff Gregory, both had to be extricated. Walk with the Mayor planned for Saturday in Corbin

Local residents are invited to come out Saturday morning and get in a little exercise with Corbin Mayor Willard McBurney and Colonel Harlan Sanders. Registration for the one-mile Walk with the Mayor will start at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, and the actual walk begins at 10 a.m. This free event is sponsored by the Whitley County Health Department and Corbin Tourism. This is Step It Up Kentucky Event is designed to encourage our communities to be healthy and more active. Wayne Hensley, a Colonel Sanders Impersonator, and McBurney will lead the walk with either light rain or sunshine. If there is heavy storming, the event will be canceled.

W’burg Kiwanis Day of Prayer Breakfast set for May 4

Former Main Street Baptist Church Pastor Rev. Bill Wright will be the keynote speaker during the 18th Annual Williamsburg Kiwanis Club National Day of Prayer Pancake Breakfast. Wright, who left Williamsburg last year, now serves as Minister to Senior Adults at First Baptist Church in Richmond. He is married to his wife, Vicky, and they have one son, Christopher. The breakfast will be held on Thursday, May 4, at 7:30 a.m. at the Williamsburg Tourism and Convention Center off of Exit 11. May 30 will be last day of class for Whitley County students

Despite a mild winter, students in the Whitley County school district won’t be finishing classes this school year until late May. Whitley County Deputy Superintendent Paula Trickett told the Whitley County Board of Education during its monthly meeting Thursday that the district has missed a total of 14 instructional days this school year. The district missed one day early in the school year due to the state high school volleyball tournament. In addition, the district missed three days due to weather and 11 due to illness. “Hopefully we are finished with having to miss school,” Trickett said. Threat closes Knox County schools Tuesday

Three school systems closed on April 18 not due to weather or illness but because of a threat made against a Knox County school. According to a press release from the Knox County Sheriff’s Office, on April 17 at 11:30 p.m., Knox County 911 Dispatch received a call reporting a possible shooting threat at a Knox County school. The caller, who identified himself with the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD), gave 911 a Flat Lick address in connection to the threat. The Knox County Sheriff’s Office immediately began an investigation and dispatched deputies Mikey Ashurst and Andrew Lawson to the Flat Lick address. Deputies were unable to locate the exact address.
