Are you someone in the Corbin area looking to obtain your GED? The Corbin Public Library (CPL) is preparing to launch a brand-new GED testing site, according to Library Director John Baker.
The site is expected to be up and running by the first Saturday of September, offering local residents a more accessible option for completing their GED. This is part of a statewide effort to expand GED accessibility.
Corbin Public Library received a $3,500 grant from the Kentucky Department for Library and Archives (KDLA) to support training, setup, marketing materials, services, and equipment, including new computers, webcams, document scanners, and e-signature pens.
The funding has allowed the library to convert its former Mac Lab into a secure GED testing space with six dedicated computers. Since there are only six computers, testing will operate on a “first-come, first-served” basis, according to Baker.
Testing at CPL will take place once a month, currently scheduled for the first Saturday of each month from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., and will be administered through Pearson VUE. Baker says this is subject to change in the future.
Three library staff members are in the process of becoming certified test administrators. This process includes passing a one-to-two-hour certification exam.
Baker said that while the Corbin site will operate on a smaller scale compared to larger county facilities, it will serve as a valuable supplementary option for the region.
The cost to take the GED is entirely free.
“We want to thank KDLA for their help. We would like to extend our gratitude to Keith Barnett, Site Manager at Whitley County Adult Education. He physically drove up and visited the library here just to inspect our site. I had zero experience with this, and to have someone who knows what you need to have is helpful,” Baker said. “I also want to thank Board Member Terry Newquist for her experience with GED and adult education, our former I.T. Network Manager Seth Martin, our building and grounds crew who helped wire it and put everything together, Gerald Peles, and Rick Golden.”
For updates or more information on registering for the GED exam, residents should contact the library at (606) 528-6366 or email contact@corbinkylibrary.org as listed on their website, or visit the front desk in person during regular operating hours.
