Knox County students currently attending Corbin Independent Schools under the reciprocal agreement may continued to do so through the 2010-11 school year, while representatives from the two school districts are urged to find a permanent solution.
That was the ruling Kentucky Education Commissioner Terry Holliday handed down in response to Corbin Independent Schools’ appeal of the Knox County School Board’s decision to end the reciprocal agreement.
"The lack of a nonresident student agreement between the districts for the upcoming school year would create many unknowns that could negatively affect all aspects of both districts’ programs and operation and most importantly could adversely impact affected students," Holliday said in explaining his ruling.
Holliday added that it is not in the best interest of the more than 400 students taking advantage of the reciprocal agreement to allow the agreement to be terminated on such short notice.
"If one evaluates the arguments by both districts, it is clear that a decision other than one that maintains the status quo would have adverse impact on both districts," Holliday said, noting the influx of students into the Knox County School District and the forced exodus of students from Corbin.
