High School Football Roundup: Week 1

Date:

The 2022 high school football season opened up Friday, and all of the News Journal coverage area teams were in action.

It was a big night for the Corbin Redhounds as they hosted the Annual Cumberland Falls Pigskin Classic at Campbell Field. In game one of the Classic, the Williamsburg Yellow Jackets managed to outlast Oneida, TN, defeating the Indians 28-27 to start the season off at 1-0. The Jackets will host Middlesboro next week.

In the main event of this year’s Pigskin, the Corbin Redhounds had their hands full with the defending Class A state champion Pikeville Panthers. The Panthers were dominant in the early stages of the contest, but Corbin was able to make the adjustments necessary to pick up a 24-19 victory and send the home fans away happy. The Hounds will be back at Campbell Field again next week, hosting the Whitley County Colonels.

And speaking of the Colonels, they hosted the Perry County Central Commodores in week 1. It was a tough start to the season for Whitley, though, as they fell by the final score of 21-8.

Finally, the Lynn Camp Wildcats tasted victory for the first time since the 2019 season Friday night, going on the road and defeating the Jellico, TN Blue Devils, 20-14. The Wildcats will play in their season home opener next week against visiting Frankfort.
