It wasn’t the warmest day ever for the race and it wasn’t quite a record turnout, but this year’s 17th Annual Williamsburg Turkey Trot still drew hundreds of participants and raised several thousand dollars for the Williamsburg Police Department Shop with a Cop program.
“Good morning. Thanks for coming Turkey Trotters. Once again we are over 300. We are going to send a lot of kids Christmas shopping this year. Thank you so much,” Williamsburg Mayor Roddy Harrison told the crowd Thursday morning right before the race start.
This year the event grossed $22,921 from race registrations, sponsorships and donations before payouts for prize money and expenses.
Proceeds from the race go to benefit the Williamsburg Police Department’s Shop with a Cop program, which takes less fortunate children on $100 Christmas shopping sprees at Walmart. The goal this year is to benefit at least 150 children.
A total of 334 people registered for Thursday’s race, and 303 actually participated this year.
Last year the event did only slightly better with 348 participants raising over $23,000.
James Overholser won this year’s race with a time of 16:51.
Allen Taylor was the top female finisher with a time of 20:01.
This year’s Shop with a Cop event will take place on Thursday, Dec. 19, at the Williamsburg Walmart.
It is not too late to make a tax-deductible donation to the Shop with a Cop program.
Make checks payable to Williamsburg Shop with a Cop and send them to Williamsburg City Hall, Attention: Gina Hamblin, P.O. Box 119, Williamsburg, KY 40769. Those needing a receipt should include a self-addressed stamped envelope.
