Friday Night Highlights: Week 5 High School Football Results

The Lynn Camp Wildcats dominated visiting Jackson County in this year's Sav-Rite Home Care Bowl, while the Corbin Redhounds and Whitley County Colonels were defeated in week 5. The Wildcats cruised to a shutout win over the Jackson County Generals Friday, 51-0. The victory improves the Cats to 4-1 on the season. Next week, they will open up district play against the Middlesboro Yellow Jackets. Also hosting a big game Friday night were the Corbin Redhounds, who were looking to get back on track after last week's loss to Pulaski County. The visiting Frederick Douglass Broncos had other ideas, though, coming into Campbell Field and handing the Hounds a 28-7 loss. Corbin...

KHSAA announces shot clock implementation in basketball, rule change regarding student-athlete transfers

Last week, the Kentucky High School Athletic Association made a pair of major announcements that have caught the attention of sports fans across the Commonwealth. Last Wednesday, Sept. 17, the KHSAA announced that the Board of Control had voted, 13-5, to adopt a shot clock for boys and girls varsity basketball starting with the 2027-28 season. This vote took place at the board’s second regularly scheduled meeting of the current academic year. “Thirty-two state associations throughout the country currently use a shot clock in some manner, and Kentucky will implement the use of a 35-second shot clock in two years,” stated a release sent out by the KHSAA. The release also went...

Whitley Co. High School announces Athletic Hall of Fame Class of 2025

The WCHS Athletic Hall of Fame Class of 2025 includes the following players and team: Chris Manus was one of the best all-around players to ever suit up for a Colonel baseball team. In 1987, despite being only an eigth grader, Chris made an immediate impact for the Colonels as both a dominant pitcher and all-around player. That season, he led the team in wins on the mound while batting over .400, earning Rookie of the Year honors, a spot on the All-50th District Team, and Team MVP. Chris continued that early success throughout his high school career. As a sophomore, he was named to both the 50th District First Team...

Par for the Course: Tri-County Country Club Reunion, O’Neill selected as PGA HOPE Ambassador

A while back, I got the idea to try and do some sort of a retrospective on the old Tri-County Country Club for an entry in the Par for the Course series. I bounced the idea off of Corbin High School Boys Golf Head Coach Joe Roberts, who promptly went to work organizing a reunion dinner for old club members at David’s Steakhouse. The reunion dinner took place Monday evening, and while it was somewhat of a small crowd, there were still plenty of entertaining stories to be heard, and I picked up a couple of ideas for potential future column entries. Those in attendance at the dinner were: Roberts, Dork...

Friday Night Highlights: Week 4 High School Football Results

Three out of the News Journal's four coverage area teams were defeated on the road in week 4. The Corbin Redhounds traveled to Somerset for a matchup against the Pulaski County Maroons where one team would taste defeat for the first time this season. This high profile encounter between two of the state's top programs definitely lived up to the hype, but in the end it was the Redhounds who walked away with their first mark in the loss column after falling by the final score of 35-28. Coach Luke Salmons squad will regroup this week and prepare for another tough test when the Class 6A Frederick Douglass Mustangs come to...

Friday Night Highlights: Week 3 High School Football Results

It was a strange night for high school football Friday, with severe weather impacting many contests and one area team securing a victory via forfeit. Williamsburg was ready to host their season home opener in week 3 on Alumni Night and Homecoming Night, but a late cancellation by Frankfort resulted in the Yellow Jackets improving to 2-1 on the season via forfeit. Next week, the team is scheduled to go back on the road to compete at Sayre. Across town, the Whitley County Colonels were struggling against visiting Rockcastle County. The Rockets came into Colonel Stadium and secured a 48-20 victory, dropping Whitley to 1-2 on the season. The Colonels will...

The Kentucky 2A sectional champion Whitley County Colonels and Corbin Lady Hounds are preparing to go on the road this weekend to open up play in this year’s 2A State Championship soccer tournaments. Both squads will travel to Rowan County for their round one games this Saturday, Sept. 6, and both will be taking on the Johnson Central Golden Eagles. The Eagles, coming out of the 15th Region, were recently crowned the champions of the Kentucky 2A’s Section 8 in both the boys and girls competitions. The Whitley boys and the Corbin girls were recently crowned champions of Section 7. The Colonels bested Corbin, 3-1, on Aug. 19 to secure...

Par for the Course: August was a big month for CHS golf

It has been a busy month for the Corbin High School golf program... First was a special co-ed tournament that both the Redhounds and Lady Hounds competed in in Lee County, Virginia. The event consisted of 19 teams and 92 total golfers. Corbin finished fourth overall, with Makena Myatt finishing sixth overall as an individual competitor. CHS boys coach Joe Roberts commented that his top three golfers - Brady Webb, Ethan Gambrel, and Clay Botner - are continuing to get better as the summer concludes and we officially enter into the fall season. Roberts commented that the co-ed tournament in Jonesville was a first for the CHS golf program. He expressed...

Friday Night Highlights: Week 2 High School Football Results

Two coverage area teams improved to 2-0 in week 2, and two more tasted defeat for the first time this season. The Corbin Redhounds went on the road Friday to face the North Laurel Jaguars in the late game of the Praxel Line Services Bowl. The Hounds received a test from the Jags, but were able to walk away with a 28-14 victory in the end. Next week, Corbin will once again be on the road when they travel to Lexington to take on the Bryan Station Defenders. Back home, the Whitley County Colonels hosted their home opener against the visiting Hazard Bulldogs. It was a tough night for the Colonels,...

Par for the Course: Golf balls… what’s the difference??

This week’s column is one I have been thinking about writing since I first launched the series back in January. As someone who has not had a ton of experience actually hitting golf balls, I have often wondered, “Is there really a need for so many different types of balls?” Let’s explore this further… Again, not being the most well-versed person in this particular topic, I decided to go online to give myself a crash course in golf ball science. I found a couple of pretty informative articles that helped to illustrate several things to me, including how golf balls are constructed, when a player should consider investing more money...
