Progress Rail in Corbin to close

The Progress Rail fabrication shop in Corbin is set to close sometime in the coming months. The News Journal received a tip of the pending closure Friday morning. The Corbin location is one of many nationwide, with Progress Rail’s corporate offices being based out of Albertville, Alabama. Officials at the Corbin shop deferred all questions to the corporate office. Amy Everett, communications director for the Progress Rail, confirmed the closure Friday via phone. Remainder of Whitley County elementary football season cancelled

The remainder of the Whitley County elementary football season has been cancelled. Whitley County Superintendent John Siler confirmed Wednesday that the remaining games of the season—which were scheduled for Thursday and Tuesday—will no longer be played. According to Siler, the decision to cancel the games is due to a number of reports of spectators at games making threats and creating a hostile atmosphere for others.  The conduct at some games has gotten bad enough that law enforcement was asked to be present at recent games. Corbin man arrested after allegedly robbing Laurel County bank Tuesday

A Corbin man was arrested Tuesday afternoon after allegedly robbing a Laurel County bank. According to a release from the Laurel County Sheriff’s Department, a man entered Community Trust Bank on US25W at approximately 12:50 p.m. armed with a pistol and demanding money. Bank tellers complied with the demands and the man soon fled with an undisclosed amount of money in a red Honda Civic. The man allegedly changed clothing and ditched the vehicle before switching to a red Ford F150 pickup. A Williamsburg man wanted for a fatal shooting that occurred Wednesday in Whitley County has been arrested. Martin A. Canada, 48, was taken into custody by Kentucky State Police early Friday morning. Online jail records show Canada was jailed in the Whitley County Detention Center just before 3 a.m. Canada faces a murder charge in connection to the incident, in which he allegedly shot Kyle W. Chadwell, 31, of Williamsburg, during an altercation at a Patrick Hollow Rd. residence. Chadwell was taken to Baptist Health Corbin, where he was later pronounced deceased. Canada is scheduled to appear in Whitley District Court for arraignment on Tuesday at 10 a.m. He currently remains jailed...

Williamsburg man wanted in connection to Wednesday fatal shooting in Whitley County

Kentucky State Police are searching for a Williamsburg man following a fatal shooting that took place Wednesday night in Whitley County. According to a KSP press release, the shooting took place at approximately 11:45 p.m. at a home on Patrick Hollow Rd. after a physical altercation broke out between two men at the residence. During the altercation, Martin A. Canada, 48, allegedly shot Kyle W. Chadwell, 31, of Williamsburg. Woman goes over Cumberland Falls, survives without major injuries

Whitley County emergency officials say a woman not only went over Cumberland Falls Wednesday afternoon, but she actually survived without suffering any major injuries. Whitley County Emergency Management Director Anthony Christie said that the incident happened about 3:20 p.m. when the woman, who is believed to be about 36 years old, went hiking starting on the McCreary County side of the falls. “They went over kind of in the river bed and decided to take some pictures. An elderly Williamsburg man walked out of a grocery store at the exact wrong moment and was struck by a vehicle and killed early Friday afternoon, according to Williamsburg police. Donald Lee Brown, 84, of Highway 1804, died in front of Save-A-Lot in Williamsburg, said Williamsburg Police Lt. Brandon White. One online student is behind bars after allegedly calling the University of the Cumberlands Admission’s Office late Tuesday afternoon and leaving a threatening message, which resulted in a lockdown at the school, according to the Williamsburg Police Department. Williamsburg Police Chief Wayne Bird said that about 5:12 p.m., a call came into the university’s admission’s office from an upset student in Pulaski County, who allegedly left a voice mail expressing his frustrations that concludes with him saying he is coming to campus “At the end of it, he says, ‘this is how school shootings happen,’” Bird said. Fatal accident on I-75N in Whitley Co. Monday

Kentucky State Police have confirmed that a man in his late fifties was killed during a single-vehicle accident on I-75 near mile marker 23 Monday morning. Trooper Scotty Pennington said that the accident occurred just before noon Monday, and that the victim was a 58-year-old white male. He was pronounced dead at the scene by the Whitley County Coroner's Office. Additional details about the identity of the victim are currently being withheld pending the notification of the next-of-kin.
