After night one of the 2023 50th District tournament at South Laurel High School, the Corbin Lady Hounds and the host Lady Cardinals have advanced to Thursday's girls' championship game. Monday evening kicked off with the top seeded Lady Hounds facing off against the Williamsburg Lady Jackets. This year’s 51st District tournaments are set to tipoff next week at Pineville High School, and while both Lynn Camp teams are coming in as underdogs, the Wildcats and Lady Cats are hoping to shock everyone by qualifying for 13th Region tournament competition at the Corbin Arena. On the boys’ side, the Knox Central Panthers have been dominant in the 51st, winning the district crown every year since 2008, with the only exception being when Barbourville won in 2015. In typical Corbin fashion, Coach Tony Pietrowski’s Redhounds look to be playing their best basketball when it matters most - at the end of the regular season with playoffs just days away. The Hounds have looked pretty solid all season long, but they did face some struggles early on. On Dec. 16 they traveled to Williamsburg, and had to battle hard in order to come away with an 80-71 victory. That was followed by a trip to the Smoky Mountain Classic in Gatlinburg where the team dropped two-out-of-three games. All 50th District teams were in action again Tuesday, Jan. 24, with a pair of double headers at Corbin and Whitley County high schools. The Corbin boys improved to 13-5 on the season, 4-1 in district play, with an 83-58 win over Williamsburg. With the loss, the Yellow Jackets fell to 9-9, 0-4. The Corbin Lady Hounds were also victorious over Williamsburg, 62-35. This was the Corbin girls’ sixth straight win, improving them to 15-5 on the season, and a perfect 5-0 in the district. A pair of boys-girls double headers saw every 50th District team in action Tuesday night. At Corbin, it was a good night to be a Redhound as both the girls and boys teams defeated visiting South Laurel. In game one, the Lady Hounds improved to 10-5 on the season with a 68-56 win over the Lady Cards. In game two, the Redhounds overcame a slow start to pick up a 62-53 victory that improved them to 8-4 on the season. When you walk into Williamsburg High School’s JB Mountjoy Gymnasium you will notice on one wall four banners featuring jerseys of former Yellow Jacket basketball greats Jack Miller (1936-40), Ed Fish (1937-41), Bill Miller (1939-43) and Scotty Perkins (1942-46). Next week, the Corbin Redhounds will host the Whitley County Colonels and four other teams in the 2022 Cumberland Falls Invitational Tournament. The tournament will kick off Tuesday, Dec. 27, with the Colonels facing Knoxville Catholic (Tenn.) at 6:30 p.m. The host Redhounds will play Bell County at approximately 8:15 p.m. On Wednesday, Dec. 28, Bell County will face Newport at 6:30, while Louisville Doss will take on Whitley County at 8:15.
