The Corbin Redhounds ended their 2022-23 season Monday night with a loss to North Laurel in the finals of this year's 13th Region tournament. Simply put, it was not a good night for Corbin, as they were dominated by the Jaguars from the opening whistle. In the end, the Hounds fell, 70-33, to end their season with an overall record of 23 wins and 8 losses. After their big win over Harlan County in the opening round of the 2023 13th Region tournament Thursday, the Corbin Redhounds were back in action Saturday, taking on the Barbourville Tigers in semifinal round action. The Tigers’ leading scorer, senior Matthew Warren, was not able to contribute after sustaining an ankle injury late in Barbourville’s first round game against Clay County Thursday evening. His absence was certainly felt, too, as the blue team struggled all night to get into any kind of a groove offensively. The defending region champion Corbin Lady Hounds were eliminated Saturday afternoon in surprising fashion by the Jackson County Lady Generals. Jackson County jumped out to an early lead over the Hounds and kept their foot on the gas, going on to win convincingly, 63-43. Corbin found themselves in a hole early, trailing 19-10 after one quarter of play. Things got much worse in the second quarter, with the Generals outscoring the Hounds 23-4 to take a 42-14 lead with them into the half. The Corbin Redhounds faced the Harlan County Black Bears Thursday evening in the first round of the boys’ 13th Region tournament. Much of the game was a defensive battle, but in the end the Hounds were able to advance with a 61-53 win. Harlan County came out the aggressor, taking advantage of some missed shots by the Redhounds in the very early stages of the game. The Black Bears’ first few offensive possessions temporarily put Corbin back on their heels, but it didn’t take long for the Hounds to settle in and begin taking control. With a 57-42 victory over Pineville Tuesday evening, the defending region champion Corbin Lady Hounds are one step closer to another title. The Lady Hounds were dominant Tuesday, leading the entire way en route to their first round victory that improved them to 22-9 on the year. Sophomore Kylie Clem led all scoring on the night with 20 points. Teammate Kallie Housley finished the night with 11 points, while Raegan Walker scored nine. On Tuesday, the championship game of the boys' 50th District tournament bracket was decided when Corbin faced Williamsburg and Whitley County squared off against South Laurel in first round action.
